1.0 Park and Facility Identity Signs
Park and Facility Identity signs are perhaps the most important of all park signs. They wel-come visitors as they arrive, providing a gateway that marks the beginning of their park expe-rience. Above all other signs used in a national park, those signs represent an architectural statement that should reflect the importance and quality of the park and the agency. Park and facility identity signs incorporate agency and department names and the NPS Arrowhead symbol. Although designs for standard signs are provided, variations in structure and mate-rials may be used to reflect the character of the park and the sign’s setting. To this end, the
UniGuide Standards offer considerable latitude in the design of these signs. The various styles are based on historic examples that still exist in many parks. Monolithic, double-post, and hanging sign types may be constructed in a variety of materials to ensure that they are appropriate to their setting. Materials may include wood, cut or random stone, brick, stucco, cast concrete, and porcelain enamel or other metals. To ensure that visitors understand that an individual park is one of many managed by the National Park Service, sign panels are of a consistent appearance, using the NPS Arrowhead, standard typefaces, and other elements from the graphic identity standards. Repetition of these components will help to create a strong public identity and reinforce the fact that parks are managed by a single organization.

Graphic Standards
1.0 Introduction
The building blocks for the UniGuide Program consist of six graphic components: typography, grid formats, Arrowhead symbol, directional arrow graphics, recreation symbols, and color.
These components are used in specific ways to visually enhance particular types of communica-tions consistently throughout the National Park System. This chapter provides specific guidlines on graphic standards for Park and Facility Identity signs.

2.0 Introduction
The Uniguide Standards specify three typefaces for sign legends: NPS Rawlinson (a serif font), and Frutiger and Clearview (both san serif fonts).
NPS Rawlinson (designed specifically for the National Park Service) is the primary typeface used on all Park and Facility Signs, and Visitor Information System (VIS) Signs (see Volume 3, Uniguide Standards). A similar typeface (NPS Roadway) is used on Roadway Signs (see Volume
2, Uniguide Standards).
Frutiger (used under license from Adobe), replaces the Helvetica formerly used in many NPS media. Along with Rawlinson, Frutiger is used as a secondary typeface on VIS Signs and Park and Facility Identification Signs.
2.1 Specifications and Compliance
Only these two fonts are to be used on Park and Facility Identity Signs. Alternates — such as
Helvetica, Century, Times Roman, or Clarendon — are not acceptable. Specified type-faces are to be used in the production of all graphic panels. Conversions that change the typo-graphic style, letterspacing, alignment, stroke-width, or size will be rejected.
2.2 Method of Typographic Display
All legends are displayed in upper and lowercase (U/lc) with initial capital letters only unless otherwise noted.

2.3 Letterspace Adjustment for Legibility
Signs viewed from a distance require more space between letters (additional tracking) than those viewed by pedestrians from a standing position. Computer software programs provide precise adjustments for such tracking needs. Within the UniGuide program, custom tracking of legends is limited.
NPS Rawlinson Heavy legends for Park Identification signs and Facility Identification signs are modified within design software to increase their letterspacing. The tracking specifications are based on a typographic measurement of an Em space. This fraction varies depending on the program used. Adobe Illustrator spacing is based on a 1/1000 of an Em space, and Quark spac-ing is based on units of 1/200 of an Em space. For example, the letterspacing for identification signs using NPS Rawlinson Heavy in Adobe Illustrator is +50 (or 50/1000 of and Em). The same space to be specified on a computer using Quark XPress is +7.5 (or 7.5/200 of an Em). If other layout programs are used, letterspacing must match the guidelines set above
2.4 Typographic Alignment
Destination legends are placed flush left (left justified) on the grid with initial letter aligned to the left side of a vertical stroke unless specified as centered on the layout grid.
Yos Nat Cen
Alignment: Initial capital letters align on the leading edge of the vertical stroke. Round and angu-lar letters are placed slightly to the left as shown so as to appear aligned flush left on the grid.
Vertical alignment: The serif is allowed to extend beyond the edge of the grid. Letters including Y, W, A, etc. are aligned inside the serif at the location where the body of the actual letter begins as shown in the diagram on the left.
Horizontal alignment: The distance between the baseline of a line of type and the imaginary line across the top of capital let-ters becomes the dimension on which interline spacing is based.

NPS Arrowhead
3.0 Introduction
Since its introduction in 1952, the NPS Arrowhead logo has become a well recognized sym-bol of the agency. Changes to the logo adopted in 2001 helped to ensure that the Arrowhead appears more often, more consistently, and more legibly on all NPS communication materi-als, including signs. The UniGuide Sign Standards prescribe the use of the NPS Arrowhead on selected Park and Facility Identification signs.
Information about the NPS Arrowhead is available online at <www.graphics.nps.gov>.
The two Arrowheads required for use on signs have been optimized for a variety of imaging technologies and for distant viewing.
The Arrowhead symbol is to be considered all inclusive. The Arrowhead should not be altered or redrawn, nor should any element within the Arrowhead be removed, replaced, or modified.

The decision of when and how to use the NPS Arrowhead logo on signs should be made with care. Although the Arrowhead is an integral part of the agency’s public identity, it should not be overused. The Arrowhead should not be used in ways that compromise a signs pri-mary purpose. For example, the Arrowhead should certainly be used on park entrance signs.
However, if a sign is obviously within a park, greater liberty may be taken in the use, size, or placement of the Arrowhead.
3.1 Arrowhead Applications
The Arrowhead is generally incorporated into Park Identification Signs in the upper over-bar section of the sign panel. An alternative is to place the Arrowhead graphic on the stone sign structure.
3.2 Arrowhead Materials
Arrowheads may be manufactured in a variety of materials, methods, and colors, either as an integral part of the sign panel, or separately and affixed to the panel or to a masonry upright that is part of an overall sign structure.
The preferred material for Arrowheads used on park and facility ID signs is porcelain enamel which is colorfast, very difficult to scratch, and may therefore look new the entire life of the sign. Porcelain enamel Arrowheads can be attached to identification sign panels or to masonry structures with mounting pins welded to the back. Such Arrowheads may also be digitally imaged and embedded in fiberglass or printed (screen or digital) on adhesive vinyl.

When displaying any of these materials on a masonry structure they should be mounted on an a back panel (of aluminum or other suitable material) to aid in attachment and to provide suitable thickness relative to size. Arrowheads that are cast or routed to create a three-dimen-sional surface may also be used providing that they conform to NPS guidelines for shape, color, and material.
Arrowheads on Park and Facility Identification signs may be either three-color (over a white background) or one-color (over a white background). Although NPS entrance signs have traditionally used multi-color versions of the logo, their use over a dark background or a multicolored stone surface may make them more difficult to see than the simpler one-color version.
Artwork for the UniGuide version of the Arrowhead is available from the UniGuide
Program Manager.
3.2 Color Standards for Arrowheads
Both a three-color (TC) and a one-color (OC) version are available. Guidance on when to use each is provided below.
A color palette has been selected for rendering the Arrowhead on NPS Signs. These colors must never be changed or altered in any way.

4.0 Color Standards for Park and Facility Identity Signs
For Park and Facility Identity Signs, the panels are Gray-Brown with a Dark Green overbar.
Timber posts are a Dark Brown similar to the color of mature weathering steel, and the sign legend is Off-White. Paint color specifications are based on Benjamin Moore products. Color for Park Identification signs utilize traditional green, brown, and gray tones used by the NPS for signs and uniforms.

1.0 Introduction
The UniGuide Program offers a variety of sign formats to identify a park and the facilities within a park. The formats include various structures and monliths to mount the signs and to diplay the NPS Arrowhead. These structures are illustrated below. The sign at the park entrance will include the full name of the park, plus the identity of the National Park Service and U.S.
Department of the Interior and the Arrowhead in the overbar. The legend to identify a facility will vary depending on whether a sign is within or outside the park boundary. Facilities inside a park do not require the full park and agency names because visitors usually are aware that they are already within the park. Sometimes however, facilities are so well known that visitors do not realize they are in a park, or the park is decentralized and has many units that are more clearly identified by the name of the facility or unit. In these instances, the park name will appear on the sign secondary to the facility name.

1.1 Mounting and Panel Formats for Ground Mounted Signs
Most sign structures and panels will be fabricated in a horizontal ground mounted format with a legend of one to three lines. These are mounted in a double post structure or on a monolithic masonry base.
1.2 Hanging Formats
Alternative formats are provided for hanging identity signs from traditionally styled “flagmount” structures. The width of these panels is not variable and can be either 36”, 48” or 72” with pri-mary legend of 3, 4, or 6 inches respectively.

2.0 Introduction
The grids shown are proportional with all relationships based on the height of the primary legend, known as “x”. All other dimensions are a percentage of “x”. Standard legend sizes for ground identification signs are 4”, 6”, 9”, and 12”. Sizes for hanging identification signs are 3”, 4”, and 6”.
The size of the sign and the size of the legend depend on the limitations of the site, the viewing distance. The format of the legend will depend on the way the name logically breaks into lines of type.
Ground mounted sign panels will be sized in the horizontal dimension to the nearest whole number. For instance a panel that measures 16.2x with the longest legend line being 12.2x
— right and left margins being 4x — will be adjusted to 16x.

Panel Legend Format Guide
3.0 Introduction
This section displays legend format options for the graphic layout of NPS/Park Identification
Signs. From this section, a UniGuide planner can select the appropriate format for a specific sign based on both the panel width and the most appropriate look or this particular display.
The ruler at the base of each display identifies the length of the legend in relation to the capital letter height (x); to this length are added left and right margin values to create the full width of the panel. To determine the size of the sign panel, use the guide below. The full park name must be listed on each sign. In no case can the park classification “National Historic Site” or “National
Seashore” be made a different type size or typeface.
3.1 Ground Mounted Format Panels
NPS Park/Facility Identification signs in the ground-mounted format are designed with standard legend sizes. These standard legend sizes are 4”, 6”, 9”, and 12”. The legend size, also know as the
“x” height, is equal to the capital letter height of the type. The ruler displayed at the base of each legend layout indicates the line length of the legend in relation to the ”x” height.
In the first example below, the line length of Glacier National Park with a 12” cap height (“x” height), would be 16’ – 6”. To determine the final panel size an additional 3x, or 3 feet, would be added to the right side of the panel, and 1x, or 1 foot would be added to the left side of the panel.
The total length of the panel would be 20’ – 6”. Using this dimension it is very easy to determine what size the Glacier panel would be using the other legend sizes. Multiplying by .5 would yield a
10’ – 3” long panel with a 6” cap height. Multiplying by .333 would yield a 6’ – 9” long panel with a 4” cap height, and multiplying by .75 gives you a 15’ – 4” long panel with a 9” cap height.

Maximum Legend Length for Hanging Panel Format
3.2 Hanging Format Panels
NPS Park/Facility Identification signs in the hanging format are designed with standard legend sizes. These standard legend sizes are 3”, 4”, 6”, 9”, and 12”. The legend size, also know as the
“x” height, is equal to the capital letter height of the type. The ruler displayed at the base of each legend layout indicates the line length of the legend in relation to the ”x” height.
Hanging panels differ from ground-mounted formats in that they have a fixed width of 12x. This includes .75x added to each side. This limits the longest legend length to 10.5x. Because of this limitation 3-line and 4-line legend formats have been created for most park units to accommo-date the hanging format option.
In the first example below, the line length of Blue Ridge Parkway with a 12” cap height (“x” height), would be 8’ – 0”. This easily fits into the 10.5x legend length. Adding .75x to each side of the sign gives a total panel length of 12’ – 0”. Using the same ratios in Section 3.1 it is a simple matter to establish the panel size for other legend sizes.
