About this file

This request for proposal seeks to upgrade an existing condenser water filtration, controls and piping system at a Defense Information Systems Agency facility in San Antonio, Texas. The contractor must enhance the cooling towers, replace piping, adjust the water pump, run temporary chillers for redundancy testing, and adjust the water filtration controls. The capital equipment project involves only the IT mechanical system and not the overall building system. A site visit is scheduled for March 31, 2021 with two sessions for contractors to better understand the work location and conditions. Questions are due by April 9, 2021.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURERS

1. The specifying engineer reserves the right to specify a primary supplier / lead spec manufacturer on all supplied schedule and specification documents. These primary suppliers have led their respective industry in research and development and their products have had proven track records in the field. These primary suppliers, in the opinion of this engineering firm, produce a superior product to the alternately listed manufacturers. The contractor may choose to supply equivalent equipment as manufactured by the alternately specified manufacturer. This alternately specified equipment shall be supplied on a deduct alternate basis and based on the approval of the supplied alternate manufacturer’s submittals. The use of a primary supplier and deduct alternates protects the specifying engineer’s design concept, but allows for a check-and-balance system to protect the post-commissioning owner.

1. Contractor shall furnish and install new double suction vertically split case pumps for chilled water cooling and hot water heating systems as indicated on the drawings. Pumps shall be Model VSH, VSC or VSCS as manufactured by Bell & Gossett under base bid. Equivalent units as manufactured by the Flowserve Corporation may be submitted as deduct alternates. Axially split-case pumps may also be substituted as deduct alternates if axially split-case pumps can meet the design criteria and be made to fit in the space allotted for the vertical split case pumps. Pumps shall meet types, sizes, capacities, and characteristics as scheduled on the Equipment Schedule drawings. Pump substitutions shall be provided with connection sizes equal to those scheduled. Pump connections shall not be downsized. Pump substitutions shall not be provided at efficiencies less than those scheduled.

2.02 COMPONENTS

1. The pumps shall be long coupled, base mounted, single stage, double suction, vertical split case design, in cast iron bronze fitted construction specifically designed for quiet operation. Suitable for standard operations at 300° F and 175 PSIG working pressure or optional operation up to 300 PSIG working pressure. Working pressures shall not be de-rated at temperatures up to 300F.

1. The bearing housing shall supply support for heavy-duty single row permanently lubricated ball bearings, with provision for purging or flushing if desired. Polyurea grease, capable of handling both high and low temperatures and that is resistant to washout and condensation shall be provided. The bearings shall be capable of absorbing both radial and thrust loads and maintaining the rotating element in proper axial alignment. Bearings shall be capable of being inspected and repaired by removal of only a bearing bracket.

1. The impeller shaft shall be of solid 1045 steel with 304 SS sleeves covering the wetted area of the shaft. 12x14x22, 14x16x22, 16x18x19, and 18x20x22 sizes shall be fitted with solid 416 SS shaft; heat-treated to 80 KSI yield strength. Pump shall be equipped with internally flushed unitized mechanical seal assemblies, mounted on 304SS sleeves, installed in enlarged tapered seal chambers. Application of an internally flushed mechanical seal shall be adequate for seal flushing without requiring external flushing lines.

1. Mechanical seal assemblies shall be unitized, single spring, EPR elastomer bellows with drive ring, Carbon face rotating against a stationary Silicon Carbide face allowing for fast and easy installation and replacement. Seals shall be capable of being inspected and easily repaired.

1. Impeller shall be of the enclosed double suction type made of low zinc silicon brass, both hydraulically and dynamically balanced to ISO 1940-1:2003 balance grade G6.3 and keyed to the shaft.

1. A coupling, capable of absorbing torsional vibration and of operating in variable speed applications, shall be employed between the pump and motor. An optional Spacer Coupler shall allow for removal of pump’s wetted end without disturbing pump volute or movement of the pump’s motor and electrical connections.

1. Pump volute shall be of a cast iron ASTM A159 material (35,000 psi) design with an integrally cast pump discharge and an integrally cast pump suction. Flanges shall be extra heavy-duty design and will be of 250# thickness while capable of being drilled for 125# ANSI flat face use. Volute shall have integrally cast support feet, gauge ports at nozzles, and vent and drain ports.

1. Motors shall meet scheduled horsepower, speed, voltage, and enclosure design. Pump and motors shall be factory aligned, and shall be realigned after installation by the manufacturer’s representative. Motors shall be non-overloading at any point on the pump curve and shall meet NEMA specifications and conform to the standards outlined in EPACT 92.

1. Base plate shall be welded structural steel fully enclosed at sides and ends, with securely welded cross members. The minimum base plate stiffness shall conform to ANSI/HI 1.3-2000, section 1.3.5.3 for Horizontal Base Plate Design standards. First modal frequency of the base shall be no less than 20% higher than the maximum operating speed (29.7 Hz at 1780RPM) of the unit.

1. Pump rotation shall be right-hand or left-hand as viewed from the pump end and in respect to the discharge flange.

1. Pump shall be of a maintainable design for ease of maintenance and should use machine fit parts that are easily disassembled.

1. The pump(s) vibration limits shall conform to Hydraulic Institute ANSI/HI 1.1-1.5, section 1.4.6.1.1 for recommended acceptable unfiltered field vibration limits (as measured per HI 1.4.6.5.2, Figure 1.108) for pumps with rolling contact bearings. Pump manufacturer shall be ISO-9001 certified.

1. The seismic capability of the pump shall allow it to withstand a horizontal load of 0.5g, excluding piping and/or fasteners used to anchor the pump to mounting pads or to the floor, without adversely affecting pump operation.

1. Each pump shall be hydrostatically tested and painted with one coat of high quality factory approved paint and name-plated before shipment from the factory.

2.03 ACCESSORIES

0. Where noted on the schedule provide one (1) set of mechanical seals for each model type of primary pump.

0. Where noted on schedule pumps shall be provided with internal bronze casing wear rings, galvanized drips pan on the base, or special spacer couplers.

0. Where noted on schedule pumping equipment may require one or all of the following tests: Certified Lab tests (non-witnessed), to Hydraulic Institute Level B tests, or Witnessed Tests.

0. Where noted on schedule a Bell & Gossett Sediment Separator shall be furnished (loose for field installation) for installation on the flushing line between the pump discharge flange and the seal area. The sediment separator is installed to increase the overall life expectancy of the seal on inherently dirty systems. The separator shall remove dissolved solids from the flushing medium before the fluid enters the seal area where it can damage and shorten the life of the seal.
