DEMOLITION Section 02 41 00-1

SECTION 02 41 00 - DEMOLITION

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE

A. The work consists of the demolition, removal and disposal of existing asphalt in work areas AS SHOWN ON DRAWINGS and the resulting backfill and compaction of trenches, depressions, holes and pits. It shall also include reuse or salvage of designated materials. The site shall be returned to a natural state.

1.2 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

A. No separate measurement or payment will be made for work as specified in this section. All work specified in this section shall be considered incidental to Section 32 10 00, Bases, Ballasts, and Paving.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 Prior to starting demolition work, the Contractor shall make an inspection with the Contracting Officer’s

Representative to determine the physical condition of adjacent improvements scheduled to remain. The Contractor shall exercise caution to minimize disturbance to existing improvements.

3.2 Demolition work shall be performed in such a manner as to ensure the safety of persons working or visiting the area. The use of explosives is prohibited on this project.

3.3 Salvageable material shall be removed and disposed of to an approved recycling facility. The goal is to eliminate at least 90 percent of the inert material from going into a landfill.

Contractor shall furnish a signed copy of the disposal agreement within two (2) days of receipt.

3.4 Debris resulting from the demolition portion of this project shall be removed from the work site as it accumulates in accordance with Section 01 74 00, Cleaning and Waste Management. Keep all pavement areas adjacent to and leading from the site, clean and free of debris at all times.

3.5 All asphalt pavement designated for demolition shall be removed to their entire depth or a maximum of eighteen inches below natural grade.

3.6 Fill material shall be placed in depressions resulting from the removal of foundations and the like. Backfill shall be compacted in accordance with Section 31 20 00, Earth Moving. Sites shall be graded smooth to blend in with proposed or existing contours and shall be free draining.

3.8 UTILITY DEMOLITION

A. All utility improvements designated to be abandoned AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS and that interfere with the installation of new utilities shall be removed.

1. Above ground water, electrical, sewer and gas lines and appurtenances which are to be removed shall be removed to a point that is a minimum of twelve inches below ground and capped at both ends.

2. Underground water, electrical, sewer and gas lines which are to be abandoned shall provide a radial clearance of three feet from the point where the new utility connects to existing system.

B. Upon encountering any utility NOT SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS, the Contractor shall immediately notify the Contracting Officer.

3.9 PROTECTION OF SENSITIVE RESOURCE AREAS AND ADJACENT TREES

A. Existing trees and vegetation adjacent to the demolition areas shall be protected against any unnecessary damage in accordance with Section 31 10 00, Site Clearing.
