Mark Twain National Forest Complete Survey Methodology
Complete coverage is a survey of sufficient intensity to provide reasonable certainty of identifying all cultural resources that might qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. The intensity of complete coverage survey will vary according to factors such as landform, ground cover and the likelihood of cultural resources. The survey strategy to be used for complete coverage surveys is described below:
LANDFORM METHOD
Broad Divide Intensive surface reconnaissance of the landform conducted at intervals ranging from 50-100 m. Shovel testing is required if research indicates sites are known in the area or if sinkholes are present.
Narrow Ridge/Interfluve Subsurface testing of the landform using shovel tests and transects placed at intervals ranging from 25-100 m.
Backslope Intensive surface reconnaissance of the landform conducted at intervals ranging from 50-100 m. Rock outcrops must be surveyed at an interval sufficient to determine the presence of any caves, rockshelters, or rock art.
Terrace/Toeslope Subsurface testing of the landform using shovel tests and transects placed at intervals ranging from 25-50 m.
Bench Subsurface testing of the landform using shovel tests and transects placed at intervals ranging from 5-25 m.
Glade Intensive surface reconnaissance of the landform conducted at intervals ranging from 5-25 m.
Alluvial Bottom Subsurface testing of the landform using shovel tests and transects placed at intervals ranging from 5-50 m.
NOTE: The depth of a typical shovel test should be sufficient to locate cultural deposits likely to be affected. In areas where shovel tests are the recommended method, but the ground is too rocky to actually do shovel testing, rake tests or shovel scrapes may be substituted. Close examination of the ground surface can suffice for a shovel test, rake test, or shovel scrape if visibility is good to excellent (>75%). Dirt roads, recent tree tip-ups, and eroded areas can also be used in place of shovel tests.
