Mark Twain National Forest Prescribed Burn Survey Methodology
This methodology applies to previously un-burned interior burn areas only. Mechanically constructed fire lines (to include but not limited to dozer, bull hog, disc) will be inventoried using the Mark Twain National Forest Complete Survey Methodology.
Step 1 – Complete an Intensive Archival Review of the prescribed burn area and within 0.5 miles of the prescribed burn area to include the following:
1. Forest Cultural Resources Inventory Information
2. The Current National Register of Historic Places Listings
3. Historic 15’ USGS Quadrangle Map(s)
4. Historic Aerial Photographs(s) (If not available see Step 3)
And if available:
1. Purchase Unit Map(s)
2. County History(ies)
3. Historic Soil Survey(s)
4. Other Pertinent Records, Publications, Informants, Etc.
Step 2 – Visit/Field Check Previously Recorded Sites and Site Leads
1. All previously recorded historic properties with contributing combustible features identified during the intensive archival review will be revisited and site updates completed with reference to site fuel loading – unless there is an adequate recent update (no more than 5 years old).
2. All site leads will be investigated using pedestrian transects of no more than 20 meter intervals. New sites will be recorded with reference to site fuel loading.
3. Consult on the findings of the archival review, results of the field investigation, and determination of effects and eligibility.
4. If the intensive archival review results in no previously recorded sites or site leads, no field visit is required. Consult on the findings of the archival review only.
Step 3 – If no historic aerial photographs are available for the project area – In addition to Steps 1 and 2, complete a Sample Survey following the field methodology outlined below:
1. The following landforms are considered to be those most likely to contain historic properties that would have surface features that could be adversely affected by burning:
a. Ridge Tops (Broad Divides and Narrow Interfluves)
b. Benches
c. Alluvial Bottoms
d. Toeslopes/Terraces
e. Glades
2. Survey the landforms listed above using pedestrian transects of no more than 20 meter intervals during leaf-on and 50 meter intervals during leaf-off.
3. No shovel testing will be required during survey, but will be used to aid with site delineation/evaluation as per standard site recordation procedures. New sites will be recorded with reference to site fuel loading.
4. Consult on the findings of the archival review, results of the field investigation, and determination of effects and eligibility.
