About this file
This document describes the United States Virgin Islands Basic Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Program (USVI BAWQMP), a project focused on assessing the environmental condition of coastal waters in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The project appears to be an environmental monitoring initiative involving territorial agencies and potentially federal environmental regulatory bodies.
The primary objective of the BAWQMP is to document environmental indicators that estimate the marine water conditions in relation to human health, ecological status, and designated water uses. The project will collect data from various areas including point and non-point pollution sources, harbors, marinas, beaches, and areas presumed to be unaffected by pollution. The collected data will be used to support biannual 303(d) lists of impaired waters, the 305(b) integrated report, and to establish management policies for protecting, restoring, and sustainably using surface water resources in the U.S. Virgin Islands territory.

USVI BAWQMP United States Virgin Islands Basic Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Program
Project Description
The coastal waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands are valuable resources that provide important habitat for plants and animals, support commercial and recreational fisheries, represent travel ways for coastal and international shipping, and are the basis for tourism and recreation industries.
However, population growth and industries in proximity to coastal areas threaten the ecological condition of the
Territory’s coastal environment. The primary goal of the
USVI BAWQMP is to document a set of environmental indicators to estimate the condition of the marine waters in the U.S. Virgin Islands in relation to human health concerns, ecological condition, and designated uses. The focus of the assessment includes areas located directly in, and areas within the influence of, point- and non-point sources of pollution, harbors, marinas, popular beaches, and areas believed to be unaffected by pollution. The data will be used to determine the overall condition of territorial coastal water and used to support biannual 303(d) lists of impaired waters and the 305(b) integrated report. Data collected for the USVI
BAWQMP will provide a basis for the establishment of management policies that promote the protection, restoration, and wise use of surface-water resources.
