About this file
This document appears to be a project description for the United States Virgin Islands Basic Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Program (USVI BAWQMP), a territorial environmental monitoring initiative focused on coastal waters. The project is associated with the U.S. Virgin Islands government and likely involves environmental protection and monitoring agencies.
The primary objective of the USVI BAWQMP is to document environmental indicators and assess the condition of marine waters in the U.S. Virgin Islands, with specific focus on areas related to human health concerns, ecological status, and designated water uses. The project will collect data from various coastal locations, including areas near pollution sources, harbors, marinas, beaches, and regions believed to be unaffected by pollution. The collected data will support biannual 303(d) lists of impaired waters, the 305(b) integrated report, and help establish management policies aimed at protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing surface-water resources. The program recognizes the critical importance of coastal waters as habitats, fishery supports, shipping routes, and tourism assets, while addressing potential ecological threats from population growth and nearby industrial activities.

USVI BAWQMP United States Virgin Islands Basic Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Program
Project Description
The coastal waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands are valuable resources that provide important habitat for plants and animals, support commercial and recreational fisheries, represent travel ways for coastal and international shipping, and are the basis for tourism and recreation industries.
However, population growth and industries in proximity to coastal areas threaten the ecological condition of the
Territory’s coastal environment. The primary goal of the
USVI BAWQMP is to document a set of environmental indicators to estimate the condition of the marine waters in the U.S. Virgin Islands in relation to human health concerns, ecological condition, and designated uses. The focus of the assessment includes areas located directly in, and areas within the influence of, point- and non-point sources of pollution, harbors, marinas, popular beaches, and areas believed to be unaffected by pollution. The data will be used to determine the overall condition of territorial coastal water and used to support biannual 303(d) lists of impaired waters and the 305(b) integrated report. Data collected for the USVI
BAWQMP will provide a basis for the establishment of management policies that promote the protection, restoration, and wise use of surface-water resources.
