About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Mentored Quantitative Research Development Award (K25 Independent Clinical Trial Required), a grant program with an application due date of May 7, 2027. This opportunity is restricted to applicants who will serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary clinical trial as part of their research and career development; applicants not planning an independent clinical trial must apply to a companion funding opportunity announcement.
Eligible applicant categories include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, higher education institutions (public and private), state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, small businesses, for-profit organizations, and other specified entity types including HBCUs, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based organizations, and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; foreign components within U.S. organizations are permitted.
The program targets investigators whose quantitative science and engineering research (mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, imaging science, informatics, physics, chemistry) has not previously focused on health and disease questions. The K25 provides support and protected time for supervised study and research to integrate quantitative expertise with NIH-relevant research objectives.
Award values historically range from approximately $35,000 to over $14 million in total costs. Project durations span two to five years. Research is conducted at recipient organization facilities across the United States. Applications are reviewed for scientific merit by peer review groups and for program relevance by national advisory councils, with review timelines typically spanning six to nine months.
The opportunity is assigned to multiple NIH parent grant programs including Trans-NIH Research Support (93.310), Cardiovascular Diseases Research (93.837), Lung Diseases Research (93.838), Blood Diseases and Resources Research (93.839), and NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (93.313).
Synopsis
The purpose of the Mentored Quantitative Research Career Development Award (K25) is to attract to NIH-relevant research those investigators whose quantitative science and engineering research has thus far not been focused primarily on questions of health and disease. The K25 award will provide support and "protected time" for a period of supervised study and research for productive professionals with quantitative (e.g., mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, imaging science, informatics, physics, chemistry) and engineering backgrounds to integrate their expertise with NIH-relevant research. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary clinical trial, as part of their research and career development. Applicants not planning an independent clinical trial, or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, must apply to companion FOA.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
