About this opportunity

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a civilian agency within the Department of Commerce, published this Special Notice on February 4, 2026, regarding a sole source maintenance agreement for a Tescan 4th generation Scanning Electron Microscope. The Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Group at NIST uses this equipment to conduct materials science research and develop metrology across atomic to mesoscale characterization. NIST intends to negotiate this maintenance contract on a sole source basis with Tescan, Inc., located in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, under the authority of FAR Part 12.102(b). The solicitation number is NB643020-26-00405, and responses are due by February 18, 2026. Market research has determined that Tescan is the only responsible source capable of providing the required maintenance services.

The objective of this Special Notice is to announce NIST's intent to award a sole source maintenance agreement for the Tescan 4th generation Scanning Electron Microscope, with a response deadline of February 18, 2026. Tescan, Inc. has been identified as the sole source based on its exclusive status as the factory-authorized service provider in the United States and Canada, its exclusive access to proprietary software required to operate the system, and its exclusive availability of factory-trained service engineers for Tescan Scanning Electron Microscopes. The contract falls under NAICS code 811210 (Other Electronic and Precision Equipment Repair and Maintenance) and PSC code J066 (Maint/Repair/Rebuild Of Equipment – Instruments And Laboratory Equipment). As this is a presolicitation notice indicating intent to sole source, interested parties may submit comments or alternative sources for consideration before the final solicitation is issued. This is not a competitive opportunity; only Tescan, Inc. is being solicited for this maintenance agreement based on the documented sole source justification.
