C-1 AJO-CAG IFT Geotech Report (12-17-2014).docx
APPENDIX C
GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND DOWNHOLE OPTICAL TELEVIEWER SURVEYS
C.1 General
Surface geologic mapping of available bedrock exposures was performed in the vicinity of
Integrated Fixed Tower (IFT) sites AJO-0446 and AJO-0450. Additionally, downhole optical televiewer surveys were performed by Southwest Exploration Services, LLC within core borings
AJO-446 and AJO-450. This data was used to help characterize bedrock stratigraphy, structure, and discontinuity properties to assist with the assessment of site grading and slope stability in the area of the proposed tower pads.
C.2 Reconnaissance Geologic Surface Mapping
The reconnaissance geologic surface mapping was completed at a sampling of accessible geologic exposures surrounding IFT sites AJO-0446 and AJO-0450. To provide a full suite of information, geologic data representative of the different ranges of data present in selected portions of the outcrops were measured. Each geologic mapping location was given a station number, surveyed using a hand-held global positioning system (GPS; Garmin – Montana 650t)), plotted on an aerial photograph, and mapped generally following the geomechanics classification of Bieniawski (1989). This geomechanics classification included the following data:
(1) rock type; (2) estimated strength of intact material; (3) feature type and orientation; (4) spacing of discontinuities; (5) persistence of discontinuities; (6) discontinuity separation
(aperture); (7) discontinuity roughness; and (8) discontinuity filling type.
The geologic data collected during the reconnaissance geologic mapping are summarized in
Tables C-1 and C-2 for IFT sites AJO-0446 and AJO-0450, respectively. The discontinuity orientations tabulated in Tables C-1 and C-2 are plotted on the geologic maps presented in
Figures C-1 and C-2 for IFT sites AJO-0446 and AJO-0450, respectively.
C.3 Downhole Optical Televiewer Survey
Optical televiewer surveys were performed within boreholes AJO-446 and AJO-450 immediately following the completion of coring. The optical televiewer surveys provided information regarding the orientation, spacing, and aperture of discontinuities in the rock mass encountered in the core borings. The processing, analyses, and reporting of the optical televiewer data were
C-2 AJO-CAG IFT Geotech Report (12-17-2014).docx completed by Southwest Exploration Services, LLC in their office. The processed optical televiewer logs are attached to the end of this appendix. The logs include the downhole borehole image and a listing of the televiewer discontinuities. A summary of the optical televiewer results are presented in Tables C-3 and C-4 for sites AJO-0446 and AJO-0450, respectively.
C.4 Results
Graphical plots (stereonets) of the orientation data collected during the surface geologic mapping and optical televiewer surveys are presented on Figures C-3 and C-4 for tower sites
AJO-0446 and AJO-0450, respectively. The stereonets show points that represent the measured orientation data in dip vector format. Based on the density of the orientation measurements shown on these plots, three joint sets were approximated for IFT site AJO-0446 and one joint set was approximated for site AJO-0450.
The approximate central orientations of the joint sets measured in the vicinity of IFT site AJO-
0446 are as follows
Joint Set 1: Strike = N20W (dip direction = 250o)
Dip = 85oSW
Joint Set 2: Strike = N80E (dip direction = 350o)
Dip = 25oNW
Joint Set 3: Strike = N25W (dip direction = 65o)
Dip = 20oNE
The approximate central orientation of the joint set measured in the vicinity of IFT site AJO-0450 is as follows:
Joint Set 1: Strike = N80E (dip direction = 170o)
Dip = 87oSE
