GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY

B-1 AJO-CAG IFT Geotech Report (12-17-2014).docx

APPENDIX B – GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY

B.1 General

This appendix summarizes the results of the geophysical investigation performed at the proposed Integrated Fixed Tower (IFT) sites and at one access road river wash crossing location south of IFT CAG-0432. The geophysical investigation was completed between April 4 and April 9, 2014. The geophysical investigation consisted of seismic refraction surveys and electrical resistivity soundings. More details regarding the geophysical investigation are provided below.

B.2 Seismic Refraction Surveys

A total of 3,740 feet of seismic refraction data were collected along 17 survey lines. One seismic refraction survey was completed at each of the 16 proposed IFT sites, and an additional refraction survey was completed south of IFT CAG-0432 along an access road river wash crossing.

The seismic refraction method is based on the principle that seismic waves travel through different subsurface geologic conditions at different velocities. In order to resolve a subsurface layer boundary using the seismic refraction method, a density or velocity change must occur at that layer boundary. Seismic refraction surveying involves measuring the time required for a seismic pressure-wave (p-wave) to travel from a source point (shotpoint) to a series of co-linear sensors (geophones). These arrival times are plotted on time-distance graphs and interpreted using the generalized reciprocal method. The results provide a simplified two-dimensional picture of subsurface conditions and show the interpreted distribution of p-wave velocity as a function of depth along a profile.

The interpretation of seismic refraction data depends on a number of assumptions including:

The subsurface is composed of a series of discrete homogeneous layers, which may vary laterally in seismic velocity;

The boundaries between these layers consist of a significant seismic velocity contrast and are laterally continuous enough to be individually resolved;

B-2 AJO-CAG IFT Geotech Report (12-17-2014).docx

The thicknesses of these layers are great enough to critically refract seismic source energy to produce a detectable refracted wave arrival at the surface;

The seismic velocity of successive layers increases with depth.

In reality, all the assumptions above are unlikely to be completely fulfilled, and the extent to which each assumption is valid varies greatly from site to site. Consequently, the interpreted seismic refraction profiles typically show a simplified bulk average subsurface p-wave velocity distribution. The degree of simplification depends on the extent the above assumptions are violated at the site.

The seismic refraction data were collected using a Geometrics S12 seismograph with 12 geophones. Geophones were linearly spaced at 20-foot intervals and were in line with the source. Pressure-waves were produced by striking a ground plate with a sledgehammer. The p-wave source was nominally placed at the center of each line, at each end, and offset approximately 110 feet beyond each end, yielding a maximum source-receiver distance of about

330 feet. With this configuration, the maximum seismic refraction exploration depth was on the order of approximately 100 feet.

Seismic refraction travel times were plotted on time-distance graphs and interpreted using time-term methods (the generalized reciprocal method). The resulting seismic refraction models represent the rock and soil depths and velocities, which would account for the measured travel times. Velocity profiles of the seismic refraction measurements are presented on Figures B-1 through B-17.

B.3 Electrical Resistivity Soundings

The electrical resistivity method involves the measurement of the apparent resistivity of subsurface geologic layers. The apparent resistivity is a type of average of different resistivities in the measurement zone. An electrical current is introduced into the ground with a pair of electrodes, and the resulting potential difference is measured at the surface with a second pair of electrodes. The apparent resistivity is calculated from the measured ground resistance

(calculated for the induced current and measured potential difference) and geometrical relationships of the electrodes.

The electrical resistivity soundings were collected using four electrodes (two current electrodes and two potential electrodes) configured in a Wenner array. Five Wenner arrays were performed

B-3 AJO-CAG IFT Geotech Report (12-17-2014).docx at each of the 16 proposed IFT sites for a total of 80 soundings. Each sounding consisted of four measurements with electrode (pin) spacings of 5, 10, 15, and 20 feet. An L and R

Instruments Mini-Res resistivity meter was used to collect the resistivity measurements. The calculated apparent resistivity for each sounding is summarized in Table B-1.

B.4 Surveyed Locations of Geophysical Surveys

The latitude and longitude of the geophysical surveys were measured using a handheld global positioning system (GPS; Garmin – Montana 650t). The survey coordinates for the seismic refraction line end points are tabulated in Table B-2, and the survey coordinates for the center of the Wenner array electrical resistivity soundings are tabulated in Table B-3.
