BORING AND TEST PIT LOGS

A.1 General

Prior to working on-site, Diaz•Yourman-GeoPentech-Kinnetic Laboratories (DY-GP-KL) personnel and subcontractor’s personnel were approved for working on-site by both U.S.

Customs and Border Protection Service (CBP) and the Tohono O’odham Nation (T.O.N.).

During field operations, DY-GP-KL personnel and subcontractor’s personnel were escorted, assisted, and monitored by CBP agents, CBP environmental and cultural monitors, off-duty

T.O.N. Police retained by DY-GP-KL for security, and T.O.N. cultural monitors.

Prior to performing the field exploration, the field exploration locations were marked in the field and Blue Stake Inc. in Arizona was notified.

The field exploration for the proposed project consisted of drilling 24 borings to depths ranging from approximately 11 to 72 feet, as summarized in Table A1. A total of 23 test pits were completed at various locations along the Integrated Fixed Tower (IFT) site access roads, as summarized in Table A2. The test pits were excavated and logged to depths ranging between approximately 2 to 10 feet.

The boring and test pit latitudes and longitudes were identified in the field by measuring from known locations using a hand-held global positioning system (GPS) unit. The boring and test pit elevations were estimated using Google Earth.

A.2 Borings

Borings were drilled by Yellow Jacket Drilling between May 12, 2014, and June 17, 2014, with a track-mounted mobile CME-850 drill rig using hollow-stem-auger drilling techniques. A diamond core was used for the rock cores. Our field engineers and geologists observed the drilling operations and collected drive samples for visual examination and subsequent laboratory testing. Drive samples were collected with a 2.4-inch-inside-diameter (3.0-inch-outside-diameter) modified California split-barrel sampler lined with brass tubes and a standard split-spoon penetrometer with dimensions in accordance with ASTM International (ASTM) D3550 and D1586, respectively. Both samplers were driven with a 140-pound automatic trip hammer falling 30 inches. Based on communication with the drilling company, the hammer used during

A-4 AJO-CAG IFT Geotech Report (12-17-2014).docx the field exploration was last calculated on October 4, 2013; the efficiency rating (ER) was 65.2 percent.

The hammer blows required to drive the modified California sampler were converted to equivalent standard penetration test (SPT) N-values by multiplying by 0.65 (N = 0.65 x modified

California blows per foot). A sampler driving refusal criteria of 50 hammer blows for less than

6 inches of penetration for the modified California or SPT samplers was used. An equivalent

SPT blow count was then calculated by multiplying the sampler blow count (usually 50 blows) by the ratio of 6 inches divided by the actual sampler penetration in inches. If the modified

California sampler met driving refusal, then the prorated equivalent SPT blow count was further modified as noted above for samplers that did not meet sampler driving refusal. Borings were backfilled with soil cuttings. The cored portion of the borings was advanced using HQ-3 triple-barrel and wire line systems. Relatively undisturbed continuous core samples were collected approximately every 5 feet from the start of coring to total depth. Sampling occurred concurrently with core boring advancement. Once the inner core barrel was retrieved, the split tube containing the core sample was extruded from the inner core barrel using pressurized fresh water. One half of the split tube was subsequently removed, exposing the core sample. The sample was then transferred to an auxiliary split tube sleeve to be logged by the geologist. The borings were backfilled with cuttings.

Soils encountered in the borings were classified in general accordance with the ASTM Soil

Classification System (ASTM D2487, which is summarized on Plate A1, and D2488). Boring logs were prepared from visual examination of the samples, cuttings obtained during drilling operations, and results of laboratory tests.

Groundwater was not encountered in the borings except for CAG-VM Wash 1 in which groundwater was encountered at a depth of 6 feet below the ground surface.

A.3 Test Pits

Test pits were excavated by C.C. Construction Arizona between June 23, 2014 and June 26, 2014, with a Deere 410G backhoe. Our field engineer and geologist observed the test pit excavation cuttings from the ground surface. The test pit logs were prepared based on visual examination based on ASTM D2488. (Laboratory tests were not performed on test pit samples.)

The purpose of the test pits was to visually classify the soils, and determine depth of bedrock, if

A-5 AJO-CAG IFT Geotech Report (12-17-2014).docx encountered, to the depths explored. Test pits were backfilled with excavated material, and compacted with the backhoe.

Groundwater was encountered near a depth of 9 feet in Test Pit CAP-TP-12.
