(Question) 1. On work item 0100-MD-10 Stbd draghead & Gimbal Davit Shafts…. The item states to remove the shafts (pins) on the two davits and provide a condition report. It states “If there is any repair required, it shall be issued on a change order.” Then it states to “Proceed to bore out the davit frame and/or machine the shafts.” We do not know how bad the bores or shafts are right now, so how are we to quote the repairs to the pins and shafts ?
Answer: Currently, the bores and shafts on the starboard gimbal and draghead davits still work; however, there is a grinding noise coming when the davits being lowered or raised. The cause for this noise could be the shafts binding on the bore.
The contractor shall remove the shaft(s) from its plate/bore in order to have a thorough inspection of grease groove, surface smoothness, etc. Any major repair shall be issued by change order. However, for estimate purpose, the contractor shall include the scope of work that states that after the shaft(s) is removed from davits, the contractor shall either bore out cheek plates of the davits/frames or machine down the shaft at least 1/8 inch per side in order to have clearance to free up the binding.
