About this file

This document provides guidelines for labeling radio frequency identification transponders used by the Department of Defense. The guidelines specify that RFID-IV compliant active transponders must display a unique 48-bit identification code in both a human-readable and barcode format. The barcode must use Code 128 and include the transponder type, barcode of the identification code, and human-readable identification code. The barcode label material, size, font, and placement are also defined. The identification code will consist of the concatenated 16-bit manufacturer ID and 32-bit serial number converted to a 14-digit decimal number for the barcode. This will provide a standardized format for uniquely identifying transponders and reading their codes.

DoD Transponder Barcode Labeling Guidelines

Version 4.1

14 June 2013

Introduction This document defines the bar code label printing format for RFID-IV Compliant Active Transponders in the Radio Frequency In-Transit Visibility (RF-ITV) system. The transponders are uniquely identified by a 48 bit Transponder (Tag) ID which is composed of a combination of a Tag Manufacturer ID (16 bits) and Tag Serial Number (32 bit), which are defined within the RFID-IV Compliant Active Transponder Protocol. For the convenience of end users who have to enter Transponder IDs into applications manually or via barcode scans, tags need to display the combined 48 bit printable Tag ID. The method of concatenating these two values to provide the unique bar code label value to display on the transponder is described here.

DoD Over Air Interface Guidelines

Transponder (Tag) 48-Bit Bar Code Label Format Due to the available size limits for many serial number labels, all RFID-IV Compliant Active Transponder labels will use code 128. Successful testing has been done on a code 128, 14 digit barcode, ending up at 1.12 inches long (limited number of lengths available, based on the code specifications built into the barcode label printing software) on a 1.25 inch long label.

Barcode Label Specifications:

MATERIAL GLOSSY, SMOOTH OR MATTE WHITE: POLYESTER,

POLYETHYLENE NAPTHALATE (PEN) OR POLYIMIDE, 2-5 MIL THICK

COLOR BLACK WEATHERPROOF INK: RESIN THERMAL TRANSFER,

PIGMENTED INK, LASOR, OR INK JET ACCEPTABLE ON WHITE

BACKGROUND

FONT ARIAL OR OTHER SANS-SERRIF FONT

LAMINATION 1 MIL CLEAR POLYESTER

ADHESIVE PERMANENT, PRESSURE SENSITIVE: ACYRLIC, SILICONE, OR

RUBBER BASED

DIMENSION 1.250” (Length) x 0.425” (Height) (Thickness range is 2-5 MIL)

• Bar code and text to be centered and conform to Code 128.

• Label shall be manufactured by a UL approved vendor. Vendor shall have a current signed “printer agreement” on file with UL per UL marking and labeling systems, and shall supply each package or roll marked with company name and label designation per UL marking and labeling systems.

• The label shall include 3 lines of information o (H, C, or S) ISO 18000-7 o Code 128 barcode of Tag ID o Human Readable Tag ID

Barcode Example:

The printable, human readable Transponder ID on a RFID-IV Compliant Active Transponder shall consist of the integer value of the combined 48 bits of the Tag Manufacturer ID (16 bits) and the Tag Serial Number (32 bits), as described in the example below. In the Tag Manufacturer ID, the 1st byte is the allocation class and the 2nd byte is the 8-bit UID issuer registration number assigned, as defined in ISO/IEC 18000-7:2008. Note that there is an error in the example shown in Section 6.2.6.4 of the ISO-18000-7:2008 standard regarding the order of the allocation class and the UID

DoD Transponder Barcode Labeling Guidelines – Version 4.1

(Reference: DoD Over Air Interface Guidelines for RFID IV (Errata) document for details). The Tag Serial Numbers shall be managed by each tag manufacturer, such that each tag manufactured by them has a unique 32 bit Tag Serial Number.

Example:

Example Manufacturer ID is:

Decimal 4356 Hex 0x1104

For an RFID-IV Compliant Active Transponder with 32 bit Tag Serial Number of:

Decimal 5286642 Hex 0x50AAF2

Add leading zeros to the hexadecimal value of the Tag Serial Number to result in an 8-digit hexadecimal value and concatenate it to the end of the Manufacturer ID (also represented as a hexadecimal vale). Convert the resulting hexadecimal value to a decimal value and remove leading zeros to result in a 14 digit decimal number for display on the bar code:

Manufacturer ID: 0x1104 Tag Serial Number: 0x0050AAF2

0x11040050AAF2 = 18708882828018 decimal

For this example, the Transponder ID printed on the transponder’s barcode label would use the decimal value of 18708882828018, and applications will use this decimal value to work with the RFID-IV Compliant Active Transponder.

Bar Code Label Placement on Transponder The barcode label shall be placed on the transponder in a location that is accessable to a barcode scanner when the transponder is installed in its mounting bracket.

For a door mount transponder, the barcode label shall be accessable to a barcode scanner from the outside the door, when the door is in the closed position.
