NDU Classroom Upgrade I W912DR-09-D-0056/0014 Marshall Hall I Ft McNair, D.C.

CHAPTER 4

AUDIO VISUAL BASIS OF DESIGN NARRATIVE

1. Background

.1 The National Defense University (NDU) is planning a renovation and technology upgrade to an existing area of the iCollege that currently holds a number of classroom spaces. The intent of the renovation is to bring the classroom spaces to current technology for instruction and student interaction. The proposed equipment and design will closely follow the newly developed NDU classroom standards. It is imperative that the design and equipment for audiovisual systems be implemented exactly as prescribed so that NDU can evaluate the new classrooms with respect to the proposed technology standards.

.2 There is great interest in using wireless technology solutions with the ability for students and instructors to share their content from their smart devices, tablets, or laptop computers. This “bring-your-own-device” (BYOD) approach is a rapidly developing area in higher education that NDU wishes to embrace in their approach to instruction. Because of the wide variety of choices and complexity of network integration with these products, a collaboration technology demonstration is planned to allow NDU education and network administration staff the ability to review a select group of collaboration technology vendors. Additional features of the updated classrooms will include properly sized displays, ability to route content to a variety of locations from an easy-to-use interface, updated connectivity, and options for lecture capture and video teleconferencing.

.3 Consideration for room noise levels and the quality and control of lighting are additional factors that will be considered from an audiovisual perspective. The target Noise Criterion (NC) rating for the standard classroom will be NC-3D and if the room is designated for video teleconferencing it will be NC-25. Classrooms will require a number of lighting presets that can easily be selected by the instructor.

The teaching wall area will require a separate lighting zone that can be turned off as needed. In addition, a 50% room dim mode should be available.

2. Description of work

.1 Classroom Audiovisual Systems

a. Room Description

• The standard classroom audiovisual configuration will consist of a designated teaching wall with fixed displays. The displays will be properly sized for the audience, considering the distance from screen to the furthest viewer, and also the intended content. The room will include a mobile teaching station that can connect at a floor box and wall plate.

Additional wall plate and floor box connections will be available to provide AV, data, and power at various locations. Wall mounted and ceiling speakers will be included for audio coverage. A wall mounted touch panel will be included for control of the room. Rack mounted equipment will be located in a centralized closet that will support all of the new classrooms. A single, shared audiovisual system head end shall be designed to support all classrooms within this group of rooms.

b. Display System

• Dual front projection system with two recessed, motorized, tab-tensioned, 16:9, 133” diagonal screens. The screen surface shall be an engineered performance surface 5uch as Draper TecVision (or similar). o r

K . Two ceiling moun ro’ectors with 3LCD laser light source. Projectors shall operate a 5600 lum standard) and 1920x1200 resolution. The_....— projector will be 20,000 hour maintenance-free.

• Include projector mount with integrated enclosure to house active extension receiver.

• Wall mounted 87” diagonal interactive whiteboard with integrated overhead projector. Include software for use with dedicated and guest computers for saving of annotated content.

• Alternate display option: For rooms with 25-30 feet from display to furthest viewer, dual 90” diagonal flat panels may be used instead of projection. In this case, the displays will take up whiteboard space on the teaching wall and this reduced writing space must be considered.

c. Video and Processing System

• All classrooms will send and receive video, audio, and control from a single, centralized, card-based, expandable matrix with input/output to support all rooms and allow future growth.

• The matrix shall be a Crestron DigitalMedia 32x32 with redundant power supply and support of 4k resolution. The I/O configuration will consist of a variety of card-based types to include DM, HDBaseT, HDMI, and H.264.

• Crestron DigitalMedia transmit/receive devices in both wall plate and surface mount formats shall be utilized. All connectivity shall use certified DM 8G÷ cabling (no exceptions). It is anticipated that HDMI, VGA, and audio input will be required for user connections.

• A dedicated computer (provided by NDU) shall be included for each room, The computer will be located within the centralized AV rack and extension of keyboard, mouse, and USB to within each respective room shall be included. This computer may include optional software to support collaboration, lecture capture, or video conferencing.

• Each classroom will include a mobile teaching cart that will include connections for a guest laptop and the keyboard/mouse/ USB from the dedicated computer. The teaching cart will connect at one floor box position and alternatively at a wall plate.

• Several floor box and wall plate locations will be designated to support the connection of guest devices (via HDMI or analog audio).

• Each teaching cart will include a Blu-Ray Player (alternatively, the player could be located within a cabinet.

• A CAW tuner may be designated per room

their mobile devices, tablets, etc., a dedicated computer will need to be installed within each “room” system that is connected to the same network that the user devices are on. The wireless user device would connect with the “room” computer via an app that interacts with the collaboration software.

• Wireless Collaboration Option 2: A simplified wireless option would be a dedicated in-room wireless interconnection from a dongle that plugs into the guest device and sends the signal via Wi-Fl to a receiver connected to the room system.

• Video Conferencing Option: The ability to utilize web-based conferencing software within the classroom environment (running on the dedicated room computer) will require a suite of devices as outlined here:

- One or two wall mounted Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras that are controlled from the room touch panel.

- Wired or wireless microphones for the instructor and other participants. This may include a gooseneck mic on the teaching station, a wireless lavaliere mic worn by the instructor, and! or additional microphones for participants. If the room is designated for regular video conferencing interaction, ceiling or table mics may be installed for better audio coverage.

- A bridging device that excepts the video and audio from the room and seamlessly connects it to the variety of web-based solution5 such as Skype, FaceTime, Jabber, etc. via USB

- For rooms with multiple microphones, a dedicated audio processor will be needed that provides audio echo-cancel per microphone.

- For a more professional level of VTC integration, a dedicated Polycom codec may be installed.

• Lecture Capture Option: The ability to easily record a typical lecture event within a room could be offered as an option that would involve the implementation of a network-based, enterprise solution. This option would require the same camera and microphone installation as used for video conferencing. In this case, the dedicated computer for the room would include the software to control and manage the capture options.

d. Audio System

• A standard classroom without any enhanced options will include a pair of wall mounted stereo program speakers on the teaching wall and 6-8 ceiling speakers. Include properly rated amplifiers.

• A gooseneck microphone will be installed on the teaching station

• Enhanced audio options would include those descibed above for the various room options.

• A wireless hearing assist system will be included for each room with multiple beltpack receivers.

e. Control System
