Industry member of the NSF Joint Committee on Public Drinking Water Equipment Performance for the development of standard for certifying LT2 compliance of membrane products (NSF/ANSI 419).
Troubleshooting and Optimization of a Potable Water Treatment Facility, Confidential Client, Canada. Retained to assess an operating potable water treatment facility that was unable to meet its nameplate capacity. Mr. Dufresne evaluated the existing process design, reviewed operating and water quality data, and coordinated RO membrane autopsies. The systematic approach applied conclusively determined the root cause of the issue. Issue was resolved using an alternate antiscalant, modifying operational procedures and providing comprehensive training on the membrane systems.
Development of Innovative Passive Treatment System for Selenium, Confidential Mining Client, Canada. Provided technical leadership in the development of an innovative passive biological treatment solution for treating nitrates and selenium from mine-impacted water at a former coal mine. Provided technical oversight for the proof-of-concept treatability studies, designed the field pilot and supervised its construction and its commissioning, as part of a systematic approach to the first deployment of the technology.
Design oversight of an MBR Wastewater Treatment Facility. Confidential Client, Canada.
Provided technical and commercial oversight of the design and manufacturing of a modular treatment facility for a land development project. The facility was designed to accommodate distinct phases in the development, where the treatment capacity for the system was to scale proportionally from the first inhabitants to the fully populated development. The phased design allowed the local municipality to scale the per capita costs of wastewater treatment proportionally throughout the progression of the overall project.
Metals Refinery Wastewater Treatment Plant Evaluation, Confidential Mining Client, Canada.
Retained to evaluate and troubleshoot a wastewater treatment for a facility that refines nickel, cobalt and precious metals. Facility discharge experienced unexplained intermittent variability in TSS and nickel in its effluent water quality. Systematic evaluation of the wastewater treatment assets identified that the changes in the alkalinity in the treated wastewater combined with infiltration of stormwater into the equalization ponds led to intermittent localized undersaturated conditions, causing the dissolution of historical calcium carbonate deposits, which would release TSS and nickel into solution. Developed operational strategies to mitigate recurrence and a sampling program to proactively monitor local variations in calcium carbonate saturation levels.
