Question and Anwser Set #9
ZCN802, FA8604-19-R-8017
Cannon AFB, NM
Question: If we were to install a mobile aisle with an elevated floor, is it really necessary to remove the existing rail? The rails and concrete should be level already, and the new rails can be designed to not fall where the old rails were. It would be much more cost and time effective to leave them in the concrete than to dig them out and re-pour concrete. The most cost effective means would be to re-use the existing rails, but without knowing the type of rail and specific dimensions of the rail we cannot get an accurate quote to do that.
Answer: If an elevated floor is utilized, there will be no need to remove the existing rails if it does not interfere with the operation of the new mobile aisle system and is contained within the footprint of the new system. (See revised Appedix B)
Question: RE: the solid deck requirement for the wide span – is standard corrugated solid deck acceptable? Or will you require a smooth deck?
With the ESD mat, you wouldn’t necessarily need the cover sheet –
Answer: Smooth decking is required per the specification.
Question: The powered mobile aisle system that is being replaced by a new mechanical assist system, re-using the existing floor and rail, could instead be downgraded to mechanical assist. If the carriages and shelving are in good condition, the powered control heads and drive mechanisms can likely be swapped out for mechanical assist. This would represent a considerable cost savings on the project.
Also, whether it is all new carriages/shelving, or if it is a downgrade to mechanical assist, this work should be done by the Spacesaver authorized/certified distributor as that is the only way to guarantee new carriages and/or new drive mechanisms would be compatible with the existing rail/carriages.
Please advise whether the downgrade is a viable option and consider modifying this portion to sole source so manufactured components align together.
Answer: No downgrade of the system shall be acceptable. A new mechanical assist mobile aisle system shall be provided with the only potential piece to be reused is the railing. The contractor has the option to provide new railing per the specifications if they chose not to reuse the existing railing.
