Maintenance and operational checklists are provided on the C-5 which are instructions in abbrevi-ated form to enable qualified personnel to perform maintenance and operational procedures with-out omission of steps and without reference to the basic maintenance manuals. The procedures in these checklists are presented in the shortest practical form for use by qualified personnel and are not intended to provide adequate instructions for less experienced personnel. Checklist technical manual numbers are derived from the basic manual numbers, allowing each reference between checklist and manuals:

USE OF WARNINGS, CAUTIONS AND NOTES WARNINGS, CAUTIONS and Notes are used in this manual to emphasize important or critical instructions. The WARNING, CAUTION or Note will always precede the step or procedure to which it applies. The heading used, and the definition of each, are as follows:

WARNING

A WARNING is used to emphasize procedures or practices which, if not correctly followed, will result in injury to personnel.

Change 37 xi

CAUTION

A CAUTION is used to emphasize procedures or practices which, if not strictly observed, will result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment.

Note A note is used to put special emphasis on a step, procedure, or condition which might otherwise be overlooked or misinterpreted.

HOW TO LOCATE INFORMATION

The instructions in this technical manual are organized for quick reference. To aid you, this manual contains a general table of contents, listing sections and sectional contents for the complete manual, as well as a table of contents at the beginning of each section which list the major items discussed in that section.

An alphabetical index locating text and illustrations of systems and components by paragraph number or illustration number appears in the back of this manual.

When it becomes necessary in this manual to differentiate between C-5 airplanes, reference will be made to the Air Force serial number.

Note All and up serialization contained in this publication shall apply to C-5B serials as well as C-5A serials. C-5A TCTO which apply to the C-5B will have C-5B applicability added. C-5A TCTO that do not indicate C-5B serialization are applicable to C-5A airplanes only.

Particular care has been taken to organize the material in this manual so you can find the information you need immediately. The sections of the manual are written so the more specific maintenance instructions are separate from the general descriptive information. Except for the general information section found in the front of each manual, most sections of the -2 series manuals are divided into the following subsections:

DESCRIPTION AND LEADING PARTICULARS

Provide all descriptive information pertaining to the particular system, and provides a general working knowledge of the complete subsystem.

xii Change 20

OPERATIONAL CHECKOUT

Describes in detail the procedures to operationally check the complete subsystem involved. This check ensures that each system meets its minimum performance standards.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Provides all trouble isolation procedures and remedies that can be accomplished at the organizational level of maintenance, using authorized aerospace ground equipment, built-in test equipment, and visual and audible indications. Although the C-5 is equipped with a Malfunction Detection Analysis and Recording Subsystem, the troubleshooting procedures in this manual are provided in addition to the malfunction monitoring system.

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESDS) EQUIPMENT

Care must be exercised during the handling of Line Replacement Units (LRU) indicated as Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive (ESDS). Refer to TO 00-25-234 for ESDS device handling procedures.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Provides detailed instructions for the removal and installation of all line replaceable units if the procedure for the removal and installation of these units is not obvious. For those line replaceable units that can be removed and installed at the organizational level of maintenance, illustrations are provided locating each unit in the airplane.

If a warning tag is required per applicable airplane technical order or fault isolation manual, comply with all guidance contained in AFI 21-101 and applicable AFOSH Standards regarding lockout and warning tags when removing components.

ADJUSTMENTS

Provides step-by-step procedures for adjustments to all system units that can be accomplished at the organi-zational level of maintenance.

CLEANING, DRAINING, AND LUBRICATION

Contains instructions for the cleaning and draining of each system and its various units. Lubrication instruc-tions are provided in each of the subsystem manuals, but are limited to lubrications that must be accom-plished as a result of a maintenance function. Complete lubrication requirements for the entire airplane are given in TO 1C-5A-2-1.

CLIMATIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION

Includes maintenance information for adverse weather or other conditions.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO LET US KNOW

It is your responsibility to submit recommended changes for this publication on AFTO Form 22 to the 565 ACSS/GFLB TO Manager in accordance with TO 00-5-3.

TIME COMPLIANCE TECHNICAL ORDERS.

Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTO) authorize and give instructions for inspection or modification of the airplane. When a TCTO is issued for a change which modifies an airplane system or component, information applicable to the change is added to the manual and identified by reference to the TCTO. The TCTO in the following list titled Record of Applicable Time Compliance Technical Orders have been included

Change 27 xiii in this manual. After the TCTO has been incorporated on all affected airplanes, the information which was applicable to the unmodified airplanes is removed from the manual and reference to the TCTO will be removed from the manual. However, in some cases where the TCTO does not affect all airplanes covered by the manual, reference to the TCTO may be retained to avoid using cumbersome serialization.

Table 1-0 contains approved solvents recommended for cleaning within the categories specified.

WARNING

Keep solvent cleaners/chemicals in approved safety containers and in mini-mum quanties. Some solvent cleaners/chemicals may have an adverse effect on skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Observe manufacturer’s WARNING labels and current directives. Use solvent cleaners/chemicals only in author-ized areas. Good general ventilation is required. Discard soiled clothes into safety cans. Unless otherwise indicated in the text, application as described in this TO should not result in any immediate health concerns.

WARNING

When solvent cleaners are being applied, approved explosion-proof lights, blowers, and other equipment shall be used. Ensure firefighting equipment and emergency eye wash are readily available and in working order.
