SAFETY SUMMARY
GENERAL SAFETY NOTICES
The following general safety notices supplement specific warnings and cautions appearing elsewhere in this manual. General and specific precaut ions must be understood and applied during operation and maintenance. The Commanding Officer or other authority will issue orders as deemed necessary for any situation. not covered in the general and specific safety precautions.
KEEP A WAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS
Operating personnel must observe all safety regulations at all times. Do not replace components, make adjustments, or perform .internal equipment maintenance without first securing electrical power. Dangerous potential may exist when the electrical power is in the OFF position because of charges retained by capacitors. Before touching, always secure electrical power and discharge the circuit by shorting through a load to ground wi th a shorting probe.
DO NOT REP AIR OR ADJUST ALONE
Under no circumstances should any person reach into or enter equipment enclosures for the purpose of servicing or adjusting equipment except in the presence of personnel capable of rendering aid.
FIRST AID
An injury, no matter how slight, should never go unattended. Always obtain first aid or medical attention immediately.
ENERGIZED EQUIPMENT
Before working on energized equipment, ensure against grounding.
repairs/ adjustments with one hand, leaving the other hand clear of the work alone.
MOVING EQUIPMENT
If possible, make equipment. Never
If equipment must be repaired/ adjusted while in motion, a safety watch shall 'be pos ted.
The safety watch must have a full view of the repair / adjustment operation and immediate access to controls that can stop the equipment in motion.
SPECIFIC SAFETY NOTICES
The specific safety warnings and cautions summarized below appear in appropriate chapters of this manual. Each is referenced to the text page on which it appears.
A WARNING is an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition or statement which, if not strictly observed, could result in injury or death to personnel.
A CAUTION is an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition or statement which, if not strictly observed, could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.
vii
The following warnings and cautions appear ID the text of this volume and are repeated here for emphasis.
viii
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, ensure there are no divers near or around the Z drives. (Page 2-1)
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, ensure electrical power is de-energized and tagged OUT-OF-SERVICE. (Pages 6-4,6-10)
WARNING
To prevent injury, do not reach inside gear case while Z-drive is rotating.
(Page 6-4)
WARNING
To adjust neutral requires operating the pump. Take the necessary safety precautions such as having unnecessary personnel stand clear and an assistant stand by for any emergency. Maximum system pressure may occur upon start
up. Ensure the operator is not in a position to be injured. (Pages 6-2, 6-3)
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, special care and properly insulated instrumentation should be used. It is recommended that the commutation adjustment be supervised by someone who understands the theory of de machine adjustment , is experienced making the adjustments, and understands the hazards involved in working with a live electrical apparatus. (Page 6-7)
WARNING
Use of cleaning solvent in a confined area can result in IDJury or death. Avoid prolonged breathing of fumes and solvent contact with skin or eyes. Avoid use near heat or open flame. (Page 6-9)
WARNING
Never turn a stream of compressed air on anyone. Severe injury or death could result. (Page 6-9)
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, ensure there is no hydraulic pressure on the Z-drive system components. (Page 6-11)
WARNING
To prevent Injury or death, ensure extreme care and proper lifting devices are used. The equipment is heavy. (Pages 6-11 , 6-24, 6-26, 6-27, 6-29, 6-32, 6-39, 6-40, 6-43, 6-44, 6-46, 6-47, 6-48)
WARNING
To prevent serious eye Injury while removing/ installing retaining ring(s), wear safety eye protection. Ensure retaining ring(s) is secure in the ring groove.
(Pages 6-11, 6-13, 6-17, 6-18, 6-20, 6-21, 6-25, 6-29, 6-31, 6-32, 6-47, 6-50, 6-51)
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, ensure the lifting eyebolt is used to lift the motor off its foundation. (Page 6-25)
WARNING
To prevent injury, exercise extreme care and wear insulated gloves when handling heated components. (Page 6-31, 6-32, 6-35, 6-36, 6-38, 6-41, 6-45)
WARNING
Removal of the Z-drive intermediate (steering) section must be accomplished with the craft in dry dock. To do otherwise presents an imminent danger of flooding. (Page 6-39)
CAUTION
It is important that the oil level is not too high nor too low since the oil expands during operation due to aeration and temperature rise. (Page 2-1)
CAUTION
Ensure that the craft \s safely moored to the pier when testing the Z-drives.
(Page 2-1) ix x
CAUTION
Do not use heavier oil. Heavier oils will result In extreme power losses and higher temperature build-up. (Page 2-4)
CAUTION
Do not allow the reservoir to run dry since the seals could be damaged and sea water could enter the system. (Page 2-4)
WARNING l)-- To pre.Lnt internal component damage, the Z-drive input shaft must be securely suppor;rduring further disassembly. Exercise care not to disturb input shaft position while removing or installing shims. (Page 6-5)
CAUTION
Do not use harsh abrasives that might scratch, score, or otherwise mar surface finisbes. (Page 6-9)
CAUTION
Do not allow machined or lapped mating surfaces to contact any surface without protection against nicks, scratches, burrs, etc. (Page 6-9)
. CAUTION
Avoid scratching and nicking critical surfaces of balls and rollers in bearings;
take care to protect surfaces of shaft/ bearing fi~. (Page 6-9)
CAUTION
Do not clean bearings ultrasonically; this method can pit bearing surfaces. Do not agitate any other parts longer than five minutes at a time. (Page 6-9)
CAUTION
Ensure that low-pressure air used to dry components is clean and dry. Moisture in an air line can cause rust. (Page 6-9)
CAUTION
If polishing is required, avoid leaving deposits of metal dust in and around bushings. (Page 6-9)
CAUTION
The relief valves are factory set and should not be tampered with except when replacing the entire cartridge. Disassembly may change the setting and cause erratic unit operation or premature failure. (Page 6-13)
CAUTION
Do not alter the shims or interchange parts with another valve. (Page 6-13)
CAUTION
Most parts have critical, high tolerance surfaces. Caution must be taken to prevent damage to these surfaces during assembly. Protect exposed surfaces, openings, and ports from damage and foreign material. (Page 6-16)
CAUTION
When installing the needle bearing, the printed number end of the bearing cage must face the press pin. (Page 6-16)
CAUTION
Do not slide the piston through the housing farther · than necessary to install the second seal ring. Sharp edges on the servo-bore inside the housing can damage the first seal ring. Do not damage the bearing ring when sliding the servo piston back into the housing. (Page 6-18)

CHAPTER 2
OPERATION
2-1 INTRODUCTION.
This chapter provides detailed procedures to operate and maintain the Z-drive. Proper operation and lubrication of the Z-drive extends the service life of the equipmen t and reduces breakdowns.
2-2 ·PRE-START CHECKS.
a . Ensure the hydraulic reservoir is full.
The oil level should be visible in the upper section of the oil level sight gauge.
b. Ensure the shutoff valves on the pump inlet are fully open.
c. Ensure the reservoir cap is in place.
d. Ensure electrical power to the uni t is available; control power is supplied from MCC panel number 4 to the main · drive motors (port and starboard) and their respective power 'packs are energized.
e. Ensure electrical power to the electric drive motor is available.
f. Prior to starting the units, ensure the combilevers are in the neutral position at the control stations (figure 2-1).
CAUTION
It is important that the oil level is not too high nor too low since the oil expands during operation due to aeration and temperature rise.
g. Check the drive leg oil level with the dipstick. The level should be within the indicated range.
h. Check the propulsion motor as follows:
1. Ensure the bearings are sufficiently greased.
2. Check flexible coupling for housing tightness.
3. Ensure all terminal connections are tight and clean.
i. When the pre-operational checks are satisfactory, start the power pack unit and turn the combilever in lO-degree increments from neutral to port and starboard.
j. Observe the Z-drive position indi . cators of all stations; ensure all indicators show the same position. Repeat the procedure on the second operation station.
k. Check the hydraulic power pack unit for leaks on the pipe connections, tank covers, and valves.
I. Ensure that hydraulic valves are in the correct position.
WARNING
To prevent injury or death, ensure there are no divers near or around the Z-drives.
CAUTION
Ensure that the craft is safely moored to the pier when testing the Z-drives.
m. When permission is granted to test run the drive units, start the units and gradually increase then decrease speed and pass through the neutral position into reverse. Repeat this procedure for the remaining three stations.
n. Ensure the water flow through t he heat exchanger/ cooler is sufficient.
o. Ensure the blower filter is clean and unrestricted.

2-3 OPERATION.
There are two modes of operation for the Z-drive: steering and maneuver . The following paragraphs describe the two modes and the changeover between the two modes as well as the emergency operation whe~ the Z-drive is disabled due to damage or repair.
2-3.1 STEERING MODE. The steering mode is automatically selected whenever the main clutch is engaged, i.e., when the main engine thrust lever is moved to either the forward or reverse position. The steering mode can also be selected by depressing the steering mode pushbutton at the respective control station (figure 2-1). When in this mod~, the craft's direction is controlled by movmg the rudder stick in the required direction. The motion is limited to 35 degrees right or left rudder (figure 2-2).
2-3.2 MANEUVERING MODE.
NOTE
Should the main propulsion diesel engine clutch be trans ferred to neutral and then to the reverse position without selecting the maneuvering mode, the ' two Z-drives will rotate in opposite directions to assume the reverse home position. An abrupt change from forward to reverse or vice versa will cause the main diesel propulsion engine to reverse directions and the Z-drives to rotate to the appropriate home position.
a. Select the ,maneuvering mode by depressing the pushbutton at the respective operating station (figure 2-1) .
NOTE
Ensure the main engine clutch lever is in the neutral position and the clutch is disengaged.
b. Rotate the combilever in each direction; observe the Z-drive position indicator.

c. With the Z-drive position indicator in zero degree:s position, push the combilever forward and observe the rpm indicator.
d. Repeat these steps for each station.
2-3.3 STATION-IN-CONTROL TRANS
FER. At the same time the station-in control is transferred between the control consoles, the Z-drive will transfer with the main propulsion diesel engine thrust control.
If the engine control room (ECR) takes control of the main propulsion diesel engine, the' Z-drive control is transferred from the present station-in-control to the pilothouse console. . The indication for both the ECR and pilothouse consoles will be illuminated.
Ensure the lever of the taking station is in the same or similar position to avoid abrupt steering changes when transferring control between stations.
2-4 LUBRICATION SYSTEMS.
There are two separate lubrication systems in the propulsion system. These consist of the drive leg lubrication system and the seal oil lubrication system.
2-3
2-4.1 DRIVE LEG LUBRICATION SYS
TEM. The drive leg of the propulsion unit is filled with lubricating oil to a point just above the level of the steering worm. The upper gear box and associated bearings are spray lubricated from the input shaft driven pump. Suction is taken from the bottom of the intermediate section and the oil passed through a distribution block located on the upper gear box. From there the flow is directed to the upper gear box spray input shaft thrust bearing, and the input shaft aft bearing. The oil returns under gravity to the drive leg intermediate section which acts as a reservoir. The system is protected by a pressure alarm contactor set to close at five psig and wired to give an alarm condition in the pilothouse. The system pressure should be between 15 and 80 psig. Proceed as follows to check the oil level of the drive leg.
a. The level can be checked using the dipstick located on the aft side of · the steering box. It is important that the oil level is neither too high nor too low.
During operation, the oil level will expand due to aeration and temperature rise;
however, this expansion is allowed for in the design of the unit.
1. IT the level is too high, the upper gear box will become immersed and will pressurize the drive leg. This will cause oil to be forced out through the filler breather.
Should this occur, the Z-drive should be shut down and · the oil permitted to cool.
Once the oil has cooled, the level should be corrected . The drive leg is drained by removing the plug in the bottom of the lower gear box.
2. If the level is permitted to drop too low, the worm gear will not receive sufficient lubrication. This will result in severe damage to the steering worm and gear.
2-4
CAUTION
Do not use heavier oil. Heavier oils will result in extreme power losses and higher temperature build-up.
b. The lubricant used in the propulsion unit is a light weight gear oil with a viscosity of 135 SSU at lOOoF. See table 2-1. "" '-10 t-

c. The drive leg also functions as an oil cooler. The oil in the drive leg is circulated by the churning action of the gear set, shafts, and bearings. The oil temperature should not be allowed to rise above 1900 F. Temperature should be checked at the distribution block by means of a magnetic thermometer.
CAUTION
Do not allow the reservoir to run dry since the seals could be damaged and Bea water could enter the system.
2-4.2 SEA L 0 ILL U B RIC A T ION
SYSTEM. The drive leg incorporates two sealing systems that require lubrication:
the sealing arrangement for the propeller shaft (to exclude water from the lower gear box and to retain the drive leg lubricating oil) and the second at the bottom of the steering section to exclude water where the drive leg emerges from the leg center section. These two sealing systems are connected by a passage within the drive leg and lubricated from the header tank. The header tank provides a static head on the sealing system thus preventing the loss of lubricating oil or the entry of water to the drive leg. If excessive seal wear occurs, it is the seal oil not the lubricating oil that is lost or contaminated. A metering valve is supplied with the tank and should be adjusted to allow a flow of approximately 10 liters per day.
2-4.3 HYDRAULIC FLUID REQUIRE
MENTS. The ratings and performance data for the hydraulic pump and associated equipment is based on operating with good quality, petroleum-based fluids. Premium hydraulic fluids containing high quality rust, oxidation, and foam inhibitors are required .
Although fluids containing antiwear addi tives are not ,necessary for the satisf!,ctory performance of the hydraulic pump they are required for associated equipment. When used, the fluids must have good thermal and hydrolytic stability to prevent wear, erosion, and corrosion of the internal components. Where water contamination is likely due to condensation, operation in a damp environment, or ~plashing, a fluid with outstanding hydrolytic stability is recommended.
a. Hydraulic fluid must have sufficient visCQsity to maintain an oil film on operating surfaces. Selection depends on operating temperatures and conditions.
Table 2-2 lists recommended viscosities to maintain equipment life and efficiency.
b. Viscosity index improved (multi viscosity) fluids may noticeably shear down in service when used ·in hydrostatic trans missions. This will lower the operating viscosity below the originally specified value.
Hydraulic fluids with a minimum viscosity rating exceeding the lowest operational viscosity must be selected.
c. Fluid temperature affects the viscosity of the fluid and resulting lubricity and film thickness. High temperatures can also limit seal life, fluids may break down or oxidize at high temperatures, and cavita tion is more likely at high temperature .
Recommended limits for op e rating temperatures are tabulated in table 2-3.

d. These temperature limits apply at the hottest point in 'the pump , which is normally the case drain. Cold oil will generally not affect durability 'of pump components , but may affect its ability to flow oil and transmit power. In general , cold starts may be made at a temperatures 300 F warmer than the pour point of the fluid. Some period of time may be required to initiate motor shaft movement , but the fluid will warm rapidly after this occurs. Operation of units at high speed without oil flowing may damage the uni t s and should be avoided.
