The technical representative is to have a minimum of 15 years’ experience with accomplishing major overhauls of marine Z Drives. This technical representative should also be present during sea trial.
7.2 Follow Lockout / Tagout requirements in accordance with NANCY FOSTER’s Chief Engineer policies and procedures.
7.3 Immediately after dry docking AND after completion of repair but prior to undocking, accomplish 2-3 PSI pressure test on each gear case supervised by tech rep. Submit condition report in each instance. Air test can be accomplished by utilizing the threaded oil fill connection on the upper gear box.
7.3.1 Additionally, verify alignment of electric motor to z-drive input shaft for both units. Submit condition report (include instrument calibration info/certs).
7.4 Accomplish the following for each Z Drive to inspect the upper gear box.
7.4.1 Drain the oil from each z drive by draining oil from lower gear box.
7.4.2 Flush gear box oil containment areas with suitable petroleum product (as approved by the tech rep) to remove seawater from the drive systems.
7.4.3 Hand turn the gear box from the input drive shaft to ensure that flushing agent engages all internal components and then drain agent.
7.4.4 Ensure that shutoff valve for the seal head tanks is secured to prevent loss of clean seal lubricant.
7.4.5 Properly dispose of contaminated gear oil and flushing fluids in accordance local, state, and federal regulations.

Measure and inspect seal liners and gears in the presence of the port engineer and ABS surveyor.
7.6.3 Submit an as found condition report with recommendations, as-found conditions noted above and which identifies failure mode which caused seawater intrusion into units (including labeled photographs as necessary to illustrate failure).
7.6.4 Reassemble the lower gear box/steering leg assemblies. Contractor is to provide all materials, seals, gaskets, etc.
7.6.5 Measure backlash readings on gears. Blue gears and check contact pattern in presence of ABS Surveyor and Port Engineer.
7.6.6 Install units on ship.
