About this file
This document contains a soil test report and related information for the Department of Veterans Affairs solicitation number 36C78621Q0044 for turf renovation services at the Miramar National Cemetery. The soil test report analyzes six soil samples from the project site, finding the soils to be moderately alkaline with moderate to high levels of nutrients including phosphorus, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, and magnesium. The report recommends applying gypsum at 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet and maintaining fertilization with calcium ammonium nitrate or other pH-neutral nitrogen sources. The related solicitation is for turf renovation services at the Miramar Shrine located within the Miramar National Cemetery to be conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

RE: Department of Veteran Affairs, H714, P.O. No. 2F091940
Dear Larry, Acidity/Alkalinity – These samples are modestly alkaline. The average pH is 7.34. The pH values range from 7.01 to 7.48.
Salinity – Salinity is moderate at 0.83 millimho/cm on average. Salinity ranges from 0.47 to 1.14 millimho/cm.
Fertility -
Nitrogen – Nitrogen is moderate.
Phosphorus – Phosphorus is high.
Potassium – Potassium is high.
Iron – Iron is high.
Manganese – Manganese is modestly high.
Zinc – Zinc is high.
Copper – Copper is high.
Boron – Boron is modest.
Magnesium – Magnesium is high.
Sulfur – Sulfur is modest.
Sodicity – Available sodium is modest on average. SAR (sodium adsorption ratio) is 1.6 on average. It ranges from 1.2 to 2.2.
Soil organic matter – Soil organic matter is well supplied at 5.69% on a dry weight basis on average. It ranges from 5.01% to 6.08% on a dry weight basis.
Texture – The soil textures are sandy loam. Based on the non-gravel fraction, they contain on average 62% sand, 23% silt and 15% clay. The gravel content is 2% on average.
Cation Exchange Capacity - The cation exchange capacity is 16.6 milliequivalents per 100 grams on average. Exchangeable potassium is modest. Exchangeable magnesium is slightly high. Exchangeable calcium is modest. Exchangeable sodium is low.
Exchangeable hydrogen is slightly high.

Soil Analyses Plant Analyses Water Analyses
Water percolation – The estimated rate of water percolation based on Soil Water Characteristics version 6.02.74 model developed by Keith Saxton of the USDA is moderate on average at 1.83 inches per hour for normal soil compaction. The model is based on the soil texture, percent gravel and percent soil organic matter. The rates range from 1.67 to 1.98 inches per hour.
Heavy metals - The concentrations of common non-essential heavy metals are low.
Recommendations
These six soils are suitable as they are to support vigorous plant growth with the addition of gypsum. Apply gypsum at 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
For maintenance fertilization, apply Yara or Simplot calcium ammonium nitrate (27-0-0) at 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet about once per quarter or pH- neutral nitrogen material such as urea (46-0-0), urea formaldehyde (38-0-0), coated urea, blood meal, feather meal, soybean meal, etc.
Monitor the planting with periodic testing. Adjust the maintenance program as needed.
Sincerely, Garn A. Wallace, Ph. D.
