3.1 EXAMINATION

After becoming familiar with all details of the work, verify all dimensions in the field, and advise the Contracting Officer of any discrepancy before performing the work.

Section [#] Page 6 of 7

3.2 PREPARATION

3.2.1 Pre-Installation Meeting

A pre-installation meeting shall be held at the project site and include a carpet manufacturer’s representative, Installation Manager, Contractor, and site POC to review the carpet installation procedure and coordination with activities. The Contractor must have the manufacturer’s installation procedure and instruction for all carpet types to be installed at the meeting.

3.2.2 Surface Preparation

Remove existing carpet and wall base, taking care not to damage walls. Sweep, and HEPA vacuum floor of all loose debris daily. Remove material from the job site daily and dispose of in accordance with Contract documents, at the Contractor’s expense.

Sequence carpet installation with other work to minimize the possibility of damage and soiling, install carpet after all work on walls and ceiling is complete, unless specifically approved by the DISA POC in writing.

Perform moisture emission testing by using an anhydrous calcium chloride moisture test kit. Moisture emissions shall not exceed 3 points per 1000 sq. ft. for 24 hours. If concrete moisture emission exceeds 3 points per 1000 sq. ft., do not proceed with the installation and notify the Contracting Officer immediately.

Perform alkalinity testing by using an alkalinity test kit. The room must be maintained at 65-85°F and 40-60% for 48 hours prior to and throughout testing. The slab shall have alkalinity between 7-9 pH. If the pH is outside this range, do not proceed with the installation and notify the Contracting Officer immediately.

Ensure any wall damage either during the removal of existing or caused during the removal of existing materials is repaired, matching existing color and finish.

Any new or existing cracks, holes, unevenness, and roughness must be filled, leveled, and made smooth with a compatible leveling compound, and have a minimum of 4’0” of feather. The floor must be free of debris prior to using the leveling compound. If a leveling compound is used, ensure the manufacturer’s safety data sheet (SDS) is on site prior to the material being brought to the site. After the leveling compound is cured, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, damp mop the floor with warm water and allow to dry, then HEPA vacuum.

3.3 INSTALLATION

Ensure carpet is at room temperature or the minimum recommended temperature by the manufacturer prior to installation. Ensure work on walls and ceiling is complete prior to installing carpet. Stage carpet by dye lot, installing the same dye lot together. Throughout installation, ensure debris and unusable scrap carpet is removed and HEPA vacuum at least daily.

Install in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations for uniformity of direction, and with the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Installation Standard. All carpet shall be installed with pile-lay in the same direction, except as recommended in manufacturer’s instructions. All seams shall be installed to maintain pattern integrity. Provide cut-outs where required, Conceal cut edges with protective edge guards or overlapping flanges. Install tights against walls so that the entire floor area and closet area are covered with carpet. Cover over all floor type door closures. Install edging guard where the carpet terminates.

Section [#] Page 7 of 7

Use only tools designed to cut the carpet being installed. Pattern size or loop integrity shall not be compromised by the Contractor’s use of trace cuts or double cuts on any side seam.

Install the carpet to reduce traffic on the carpet to prevent potential for soiling. Protect the installed carpet with 6-mil polyethylene covering with taped joints whenever protection is required. If furniture will be rolled or slid over the carpet, use a plywood or Masonite board to protect the carpet.

Deteriorated, damaged, and worn carpet must be replaced at Contractor’s expense.

3.4 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING

On completion of each area, all dirt, unusable scraps, etc., must be removed from the surface of the carpet. Any soiling spots or excessive adhesive on the carpet shall be removed with the proper spot remover. The spot remover manufacturer’s safety data sheet (SDS) must be on site prior to the material being brought to the site.

Vacuum carpet using a commercial dual motor vacuum of the type recommended by the carpet manufacturer. Remove all soiling and spots, if soiling and spots cannot be removed, replace the carpet. Remove any protruding yarns with shears or sharp scissors.

3.5 CLOSEOUT ACTIVITIES

3.5.1 Inspection

Upon completion of the carpet installation, it shall be inspected by the owner, construction Manager and Contractor. Remove rejected carpeting and replace with new carpeting.

3.5.2 Record Drawings

Upon completion, and before final acceptance of the work, submit a complete record drawing showing the final furniture layout of the room. Provide record working drawings no smaller than A0 30 by 42 inches, reproducible with title block 8 by 4 inches similar to full size Contract drawings in .pdf and AutoCAD 2021 compatible electronic format.
