Questions 8-18-2010

Q1 Sheet S1.1 shows the top of all exterior footings at 92’-6”, which will require an 8’ concrete foundation wall and column pilasters. Is there a reason why these would need to be so deep? If the soils are a concern under the building footings could we do an over-ex and a structural fill and move the top of footings to say 96’-6”, which would still be below the frost level minimums. Per the Geotech report they show a structural fill section, but do not show anything on the plans. If this would be acceptable, could the on-site gravel borrow be used as structural fill?

A1 The drawings are correct and the top of all footings is as shown in the drawings.

Q2. The rappel tower sheet T2.1 shows structural fill under the footings and refers to see general notes for compacted structural fill. I could not find any notes on the plans. Please clarify extent of structural fill and type of fill material that is required. Can on-site gravel borrow be used as well for structural fill?

A2 Delete the requirement for structural fill under the rappel tower footings from drawings. The top of all reinforced concrete footings for the Rappel tower shall be 92'-6", assuming the grade level is equal to 100'-0".

Q3. Per section 074113 1.9 C.1 – no manufacturers will provide a 10 year weathertightness warranty. As well per section 074213 1.9 C.1 – no manufactures will provided a 5 year weathertightness warranty. Please advise. We can get the installers to provide an installation warranty for the weathertightness but no manufacturers will do it.

A3 Remove paragraphs from the contract 074113.1.9.C. and 074213.1.9.C

Q4. Sheet A902 on the Finish Schedule calls for Tile on the North Wall of Room 120. The wall section cut shown on 1/A405 for this wall shows painted gypsum board. Please advise.

A4 Delete the erroneous requirement to install tile on the north wall of room 120 as shown in the finish schedule. This wall will be painted gypsum board to match the other three walls in the room.

Q5. Per section 321200 1.2B – Superpave is the only asphalt mix approved to be used for this project. With a Superpave mix design it will need to be all trucked from Idaho Falls. However if a State

Department of Transportation mix design was acceptable as noted to be approved by the Contracting

Officer this could be batched locally. Last year at the Airport a mix design was accepted and used that was batched locally. Will the Contracting Officer accept another design other than the Superpave?

A5 If the technical specification of the documents are met, substitute products will be allowed.

Q6. Jeldwen is an acceptable manufacturer for the Out-Swing Entry doors per section 082143, however they are not listed as an approved manf. per section 085200. Would Jeldwen be an acceptable manufacture provided they meet all the requirements per section 085200?

A6 Any manufacturers meeting the technical requirements of section 085200 are acceptable.

Q7. Per section 061753 1.5 F requires a Forest Certification? Is this intended to be required? This is not a requirement of any of the other lumber or timber requirements on this project. Please advise.

A7 Please delete the requirement for a Forest Certification in 061753.1.5

Q8. I am a Steel fabricator looking at the above project. I am a little confused on the material requirements for the Structure. In the Structural Steel specs it is calling for the “Structural Steel

Shapes, Plates, and Bars to be Corrosion-Resisting: ASTM A 588/A 588M, Grade 50.” Is this for all of the wide flange columns?

This is a surprise to me as I believe all of this material is Galvanized and wouldn’t require the ASTM A

588 material.

A8 Add the following:

The tower will not be painted. All steel and connectors will be as noted below and in the specifications.

Some components like gratings are a specified and are galvanized.

For the tower:

Structural shapes to conform to ASTM A588-50, FY= 50KSI.

Structural Tubing: ASTM 500, FY=46ksi.

Steel Pipe ASTM A847, FY= 50 ksi.

Misc connecting plates, angles and channels to conform to ASTM A588, FY= 50 ksi min.

Steel to be fabricated and erected in accordance with AISC specifications for design , fabrication and erection of structural steel buildings.

Welding is to be performed by AWS certified welders using E70XX electrodes.

Bolts shall be ASTM A325 High strength bolts unless noted as ASTM A307.

Anchor rods: ASTM A307.

Expansion bolts in concrete ITW Ramset/Rehead "Trubolt" (ICBO Report No. ER-1372) or approved equal.

Adhesive anchors: ITW ramset/Redhead EPCON-A-7 with STD A307 rods (ICBO report No. ER-5560) or approved equal.

Powder actuated Fasteners: Ramset/Rehead Powder Actuated Fasteners (ICBO Report No 1639) or approved equal.

Install all expansion bolts, adhesive anchors and powder actuated devices according to manufacturer's recommendation.

All anchor rods shall be cast in place.

Provide temporary bolting and connections required to comply with OSHA regulations. Prefabricated stairs and railings may be used with the approval of the Contracting Officer .
