About this file

This is a technical specification document for Section 230553 – Identification for HVAC Piping and Equipment – part of project 25-388 CBI HVAC and Lighting Upgrade. The specification establishes requirements for identification materials and installation procedures for HVAC systems, including nameplates, tags, duct markers, stencils, pipe markers, and ceiling tacks. Products must comply with ASME A13.1 (Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems, 2023) and ASTM D709 standards. Identification applications are specified for various equipment types: nameplates for air handling units, control panels, ductwork, heat transfer equipment, pumps, and tanks; tags for air terminal units and piping; adhesive-backed markers for ductwork; ceiling tacks for dampers and valves located above lay-in ceilings; and stencils for painted identification. Submittals include lists of wording and color coding, valve charts with tag numbers and locations, product data sheets, manufacturer installation instructions, and project record documents identifying actual valve locations.

Approved manufacturers are specified for each product category, including Advanced Graphic Engraving LLC, Brimar Industries Inc, Kolbi Pipe Marker Co, Brady Corporation, Seton Identification Products, and Craftmark, with substitutions permitted under Section 016000. Installation requirements include surface preparation with degreasing and cleaning, mechanical fasteners or adhesive application for nameplates, corrosion-resistant chain for tags, and stencil painting per Section 099123. Pipe markers must comply with ASME A13.1 color coding: green with white letters for heating, cooling, and boiler feedwater; orange with black letters for toxic and corrosive fluids; and blue with white letters for compressed air. Ceiling tacks are color-coded yellow for HVAC equipment, red for fire and smoke dampers, and blue for heating/cooling valves. Identification must be located at air handling units, penetrations, obstructions, adjacent to valves and tees, and at intervals not exceeding 20 feet on straight runs.
