Comfort Stations – CUVA Questions and Answers listed below:
QUESTIONS:
Question # Question Answer/Response 1.
Attached is the substitution form and data sheets for the Comfort Station Construction - Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CUVA) project . I am able to provide complete chemical resistance data sheets and samples upon request. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me or call my direct number listed below.
Is this an acceptable alternative – considered to be an “or equal” product?
(Please see Product Specs for Approval #1 document for this question)
The alternate floor and wall coating (approval #1) is an acceptable alternative as it appears to meet the salient characteristics and purpose of the original product.
2.
It was mentioned at the site visit that Heat Trace wire was to be installed on the pipe that is suspended from the foot bridge. Please clarify.
Although heat trace was considered early in the design, the final solution does not include heat trace.
The 3” service line is insulated with a 6” pipe to prevent freezing and a 14” wrapped carrier pipe.
3.
I would like to request approval of our Multiwall Polycarbonate Glazing System for Specification Section 085210 -Aluminum Manufactured Windows on the above referenced project. Our system utilizes 40mm Multiwall Polycarbonate glazing for the infill panels and a thermally broken framing system designed for use with multiwall polycarbonate glazing. WindowTherm Wall System is completely engineered and prefabricated including drawings.
Our aluminum framing system uses a slipcoat on our gasket to allow the panel to expand and contract easily in the glazing pocket. Our warranty includes a single source warranty for all components with a ten-year guarantee for the panel against yellowing and hail damage.
Included in this substitution request are Product Substitution Form, project specifications with notes in the margin, product data sheet, and details of our system.
Is this an acceptable alternative – considered to be an “or equal” product?
(Please see Product Specs for Approval #2 document for this question)
This product is not approved as it does not meet the salient characteristics provided in the specification, specifically for testing. Spec. 085210 – no leakage test: the spec calls for no leak at 12 PSF pressure, and this product 6.9 PSF. Air leak test cannot exceed 0.1, this product is 0.3 so it does not meet the requirement.
4.
In regard to Specification Section 085210 -Aluminum Manufactured Windows, the Basis of Design is Kawneer Trifab 450. The specified glazing is 40mm multiwall polycarbonate. Is this the correct aluminum framing for the use of multiwall polycarbonate glazing?
Per the Kawneer website, this system is designed for 1/8", ¼", or 3/8" thick glazing infill. The specifications call for 40mm (1 9/16") multiwall polycarbonate. Also, the manufacturers of the 40mm multiwall sheets do not recommend the use of glass storefront framing for the panel.
We want a 40mm self-framed window. That is what the specification calls for. Alternatives or equivalents can be evaluated and approved. The intent of the specification is an encased window, not to build a frame.
5. 1) Is it possible they would change the 2”x2” wall studs to 2” x 4” for appropriate depth electrical boxes for devices especially GFCI outlets will not fit in a 1-1/2” deep electric box as required for a 2” stud (1-5/8” deep).
2) Is all wiring recessed or is surface mounted conduit acceptable? (note recessed wall depth above).
3) Can mc cable be used as permitted by NEC to stub down wall rough-ins into basement and connect circuiting in basement?
4) Is all required to be in conduit ¾” EMT min.?
1. Yes, we would consider 2”x4”.
2. All wiring is to be recessed per the specification.
3. Yes, as long as it follows NEC requirements it can be used.
4. Yes, ¾” minimum needs to be in conduit.
6.
What does the architect want for those two triangle frames? Drawings show a Kalwall or similar system and the spec says storefront with a 1-9/16”± panel that won’t fit in it.
Building a frame is not the intent.
The intent of the design is that windows will have their own frames. We will review submittal equivalents after a project award.
7.
Ownership of the Hike and Bike trail came up during the pre-bid site walk, as it relates to the work for the water main extension. Is any Metro Parks permitting required?
The Hike and Bike trail is owned and maintained by Summit Metro Parks. A Special Use Permit will be necessary for any work near or on the trail. The contractor who is awarded the project will be responsible for submitting the completed permit to Mark Szeremet at Summit Metro Parks.

8.
Are there any electrical items that need to be maintained during demolition?
Life safety lighting for the tunnel lighting and any associated parking lot lighting will need to be maintained through a temporary panel during construction.
9.
Are the existing port-a-johns to be maintained by the contractor during construction?
Yes, per Specification section 01 50 00, the contractor is required to provide separate port-a-johns for the contractor team, as well as for the visiting public. 5 port-a-johns are required for public use (2 of which must be ADA accessible).
Port-a-johns must be serviced 3 days a week with at least (1) servicing over the weekend. Ensure all port-a-johns meet sanitary conditions and are not overflowing at any time. This service is critical to the operation of this site as it is one of the highest visited locations in the park and these temporary contractor-provided restrooms will need to be maintained to prevent unsanitary overflow conditions.
