Dehumidification Upgrades at NCTC Question and Answer Set 2

Question 1: Is there a piping plan for the coil connections forthcoming (see drawing MD-401-

E-T, general note #3). Also please read the clarification below from the supplier of the NovalAire Dehumidification units and advise.

Some of the specification language comes from the larger size NovelAire DES/DX-CR units, but are not available on the smaller 600 DES/DX CR

EXCEPTIONS / CLARIFICATIONS

• VFD is not available for 600 DES/DX CR

• Cabinet Insulation is 1 inch thick

• Removable Panel over Electrical Section

• No DDC Controller

The 600 DES/DX CR only needs a closed contact for a 24VAC control circuit to run so the unit will interface with almost any standard humidistat. The schedule notes indicate DH unit shall energize any time respective AHU is running. In addition to interlocking the DH with the AHU, there should be a separate “dehumidify” input based on space Relative Humidity or some other metric that calls on our unit to dehumidify. It is designed for low-temp operation but there is a limit. Fans will run on a separate contact to maintain balance for OA flow.

Answer 1: No, the note in parentheses was left in error. See M-401-E-T for new work required and additional information.

1. VFD is not required. But motor starter for unit is. Coordinate with electrical to verify unit installed is a turnkey installation.

2. Cabinet insulation thickness from factory may by 1”. Material shall remain as specified.

3. Electrical cabinet needs to be enclosed so no wires are exposed or pose a danger to maintenance staff. Factory assembled unit is required and any miscellaneous items filed installed shall meet all NFPA, IBC, and NEC codes. Panel does not have to be removable.

4. DDC controller is not required to operate the unit per Note 4 on equipment schedule. Intent is to only monitor the unit to verify it is running.

5. The DDC input output summary table on M-601 shows a sensor for outside air RH and T. To protect the desiccant unit, have the unit shut off when outside air temperature drops below 40 degrees. The intent of the unit is to dry the building out even when RH outside is low, so do not recommend controlling the unit off the RH levels inside or outside the building.
