About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding a federal contract opportunity to replace air filters in building evaporator units at multiple locations in Phoenix, Arizona. The opportunity involves installing custom frames and MERV 8 media filters in nine evaporator units, with eight units requiring three frames per side and the shipping unit allowable to have two frames per side. The contractor will need to determine appropriate frame sizes. There are currently no custom frames installed but the existing media sits in channels where the new frames will be placed. Backing may be included in the custom frames to hold the media in place while allowing sufficient airflow, and only the shipping unit is specified as potentially having two filters per intake rather than the standard three filters per unit for the other locations.

Text version

1.) Should NEW frames for those particular units which already have custom frames be included in the bid?

The existing media does not have any frames made yet. We just pushed the media into the channels that the new frames will sit in.

2.) The provided Price Schedule documents outline nine evaporator units. How many of them require custom frames (3x per unit). How many custom frames are required? Are 27 custom frames required?

There are a total of nine units. Eight of those units must have six frames per side which equals 96 frames. The unit in shipping can have two frames per side totaling 100 frames. Then 10 frames we will keep on hand in case of damage.

3.) If the requirement is to provide, install and maintain 3 MERV 8 media filters and associated frames per each walk-in cooler unit, can you please provide the size of the filters/frames per unit?

The filter sizes and locations are posted here on SAM. Regarding frame sizes, that is something that the contractor will need to determine.

4.) The Statement of Work provides detailed quantities and sizes of filters. Assuming the existing walk-in cooler evaporator units currently operate with MERV 8 pleated filters, 2 per unit. If included, which pleated filter size correlates to the filters outlined in the SOW and/or does the SOW account for existing MERV 8 pleated filters being replaced with MERV 8 media filters?

The filter sizes and locations are posted here on SAM.

5.) With regard to the custom frames, are the existing custom frames built with some type of backing or expanded metal to prevent the media filters from being sucked into the intake of the unit? Or is the media placed/installed over an existing pleated filter?

Currently there are no custom frames. The media that is currently in place is sitting in the channels where the frames will eventually sit. We are not opposed to having backing to hold the media in place, but it must allow sufficient airflow to the evaporator unit.

6.) The last walk-in cooler we visited had only one unit with existing pleated filters that were to be changed over to media filters. It was mentioned that 2 filters per intake were the exception. Is that the only unit with this requirement or are there others?

The last unit we visited was the shipping cooler. Two frames per side on that unit would be acceptable due to having enough space to remove the frames. And that is the only unit where two frames per side would be allowed. The other units with custom frames must have three frames.
