QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

12010918R0009 9/20/2018

1. What are the requirements for latrines at the bridges? Will the Contractor be required to remove all biological waste from the site?

The Forest Service has no specific requirement for managing human/biological waste. The Contractor would need to coordinate with the COR after award to agree on an acceptable plan for managing biological waste.

2. Will a bear protection class be required for the construction crew working on this project? Will the crew be allowed to have firearms on the work site?

No class is “required”. Safe/smart handling of food and attractants is a good practice to reduce likelihood of a bear issue.

The crew will be allowed to have firearms on the worksite. Personnel are expected to follow safe practices for carrying and storing firearms and ammunition.

3. The area marked as the clearing limits are too small for staging the bridge girders and lifting them with the helicopter. Can limits be pushed an additional 100’ past the eastern abutment on bridge 1.119 and 100’ on the Western end of bridge 2.268 to accommodate an area for the helicopter to safely maneuver the load? We are not requesting that trees greater in diameter than 12” be removed from this area, but if limbing is necessary in this larger area, will that be allowed.

Additional clearing would be acceptable, pending CO approval of marked area (approval can be requested after award). Large trees would need to be saved/protected. Limbing on an as needed basis can be approved. Would want to limit clearing to only what is needed, however brush/small trees can be removed for safe work.

4. When installing the girders we intend to use the existing trees in the area as deadmen to anchor equipment. Will the forest service allow this action with softeners on the trees?

Yes this is acceptable. Protect tree trunks from damage with padding/web saddles.

5. Is Stabler’s Pit in Juneau an approved material source for this project?

Yes, this site produces an acceptable material. Material would still need to meet specifications for proper backfill size.
