About this file

This document is an Extended Service Coverage Agreement from Detroit Diesel Corporation for EW4 Detroit engines, applicable to products sold and used in the United States and Canada. The agreement outlines the terms, conditions, and scope of extended warranty coverage for Detroit engines, providing two primary service coverage options: On-Highway Option and Vocational Option.

The agreement covers 100% parts and labor for qualified parts that fail due to defects in workmanship or material, with coverage commencing after the standard new product warranty expires. Qualified parts include the engine itself, aftertreatment system components, and specific support system elements, though certain accessories and maintenance items are excluded. The coverage has specific time and mileage limitations measured from the original product delivery date, and can be transferred to subsequent owners within 60 days of ownership change, with a $400 late fee applicable for transfers between 61 days and 6 months after ownership change. Repairs are performed at authorized Detroit service facilities during normal working hours, and the agreement applies specifically to Detroit engines operating in the U.S. and/or Canada.

I. INTRODUCTION

This document describes the coverage provided under the Detroit Diesel Corporation (“Detroit”) Extended Service Coverage Agreement (“Agreement”).

The coverage provided is applicable to the engine(s) described in the Power Protection Plan Agreement Registration (“Agreement Registration”), a separate document.

All eligible failures, as defined elsewhere in this Agreement, should be reported promptly to the authorized Detroit service outlet.

II. KEY TERMS

AGREEMENT PERIOD:

The Agreement coverage will commence upon the expiration of the standard new product warranty and shall extend to the time or odometer (hubometer) mileage limits, whichever occurs first, specified in the coverage section. Coverage time and mileage limitations are measured from the date of delivery of the product to the first retail purchaser.

CUSTOMER:

The person, organization or corporation named in the Agreement Registration.

ELIGIBLE PRODUCT:

Defined as the Detroit™ engine described in the Agreement Registration. Products eligible for this coverage are Detroit engines sold at retail and used in the U.S. and/ or Canada.

FAILURE:

Any original or like-replacement part covered by the Agreement that fails to perform in normal service due to defects in material or workmanship. Original or replacement parts that fail to perform as the result of wear-out are not included under this definition.

ODOMETER OR HUBOMETER MILES:

The mileage recorded on an odometer/hubometer (which has not been stopped or changed to lower mileage from actual mileage). In the case of swing engines or an odometer/hubometer that is broken, the actual mileage on the engine is to be determined from accurate and complete service records.

PARTS:

Parts manufactured by, or for, and distributed by or for Detroit.

QUALIFIED PARTS:

All Detroit™ genuine parts, aftertreatment system (diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter, SCR catalyst) and aftertreatment support system components (hydrocarbon fuel line, hydrocarbon injection valve, hydrocarbon metering unit, aftertreatment sensors, aftertreatment control module, DEF pump, DEFF metering unit, ATS sensors, ATS harness, DEF injection unit).

Except:

Engine: Accessories (i.e., generator, alternator, starting motor, hydraulic pump, vacuum pump) maintenance items, replacement of pistons, rings and cylinder liners resulting from wear-out.

LIKE REPLACEMENT PARTS:

New Detroit genuine parts, remanufactured parts, or components supplied or approved by Detroit that replace parts covered under this Agreement.

REPAIR:

The correction by any authorized Detroit service outlet during normal working hours of a defect or malfunction in an existing Detroit genuine part, or the replacement of that part using new parts or remanufactured parts supplied or approved by Detroit.

III. PROVISIONS

A. CONDITIONS

Detroit will repair any defective or malfunctioning qualified part(s) of each eligible product during the Agreement Period.

This Agreement provides conditions resulting from any original or like-replacement part covered by the Agreement that fails to perform in normal use and service due to defects in material or workmanship.

B. COVERAGES

COVERAGE FOR DETROIT ENGINES (EW4)

There are two Extended Service Coverage options available for Detroit engines.

ON-HIGHWAY OPTION:

Provides coverage of 100% parts and labor on qualified parts that fail, under normal use and service, due to defects in workmanship or material, up to time, mileage, or hour limitations.

Coverage includes remove and replace (R&R) and the replacement of service supplies (i.e., coolant, belts and lubricating oil) when not reusable due to a covered failure.

In addition, progressive damage to any engine part resulting from the failure of a qualified part is covered under the Agreement.

VOCATIONAL OPTION:

Provides coverage of 100% parts and labor on qualified parts that fail, under normal use and service, due to defects in workmanship or material, up to time, mileage, or hour limitations.

Coverage includes R&R and the replacement of service supplies (i.e., coolant, belts and lubricating oil) when not reusable due to a covered failure.

SERVICE COVERAGE

C. COVERAGE LIMITATIONS

1. The replacement of normal maintenance items as outlined in the Engine Operator’s Guide (such as filters, belts, hoses, air cleaners, and fluids) is not covered.

2. Performance of engine tune-up is not included in the coverage unless required due to the failure of a qualified part.

3. Coverage does not include parts not furnished by Detroit, or parts furnished by any other manufacturer or equipment supplier as part of the original vehicle or equipment.

Examples of such parts may include air cleaners, air cleaner ducting, radiator, radiator connections.

4. Failure due to misuse, negligence, accident, alteration, misapplication, lack of proper maintenance or the use of parts not approved by Detroit is not covered under this Agreement.

5. Coverage does not include failure due to chemical corrosion and physical erosion.

6. Coverage does not include repairs or replacement of qualified parts performed by other than an authorized Detroit service outlet, so as to affect adversely, in the judgment of Detroit, its performance and reliability.

7. Failure caused by fire, theft, freezing, vandalism, riot, explosion, lightning, earthquake, windstorm, hail, water or flood is not covered under this Agreement.

8. Coverage does not include failure covered by a repairing outlet’s guarantee, loss of time, loss of use of the product, inconvenience, lodging, food or other consequential loss that may result from a failure.

9. Cylinder liner, piston and piston ring failures attributable to wear-out are specifically excluded from this Agreement.

The wear rate of parts in any engine, and especially those parts within the combustion area, will vary depending on operating conditions and environment. Conditions, such as load, trailer configuration, road speed and road conditions, as well as the quality of air, fuel, fuel filters, lube oil and lube oil filters bear a direct relationship to the wear rate and resulting life of parts.

Depending upon the severity of these various conditions, parts wear and resulting failure could occur within the limitations of this Agreement.

10. Coverage does not include towing, overtime, mechanic’s travel time and/or mileage.

11. Coverage does not include performance complaints (including but not limited to low power, poor fuel economy, etc.) unless caused by the failure of a qualified part.

12. The terms of this Agreement applies to any published or unpublished Detroit engine Extended Service Coverage.

D. CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES

1. The owner is responsible for the performance of regular maintenance services as specified in the Engine Operator’s Guide.

2. In the event of a failure, a customer must:

a. Use all reasonable means to protect the engine from more damage.

b. Notify any authorized Detroit service outlet, as soon as possible.

c. Present proof of coverage to the authorized repairing outlet (Agreement Registration).

d. Provide Detroit with any information reasonably required.

If requested, the customer must provide Detroit with the failed material for inspection.

E. GENERAL PROVISIONS

1. This Agreement will terminate when the customer sells or loses possession of the product.

2. Extended Service Coverage which has been purchased at retail by the original owner may be transferred to subsequent owners of the product. The coverage that may be transferred is limited to the time remaining on the unused portion of the coverage. To determine eligibility for transfer, refer to the Agreement Registration form or via the Detroit Warranty System coverage screen.

In the event of vehicle sale or trade prior to expiration of the coverage, the Extended Service Coverage may be transferred to subsequent owners.

In order to have a valid transfer of coverage, the owner must supply the subsequent owner with his copy of the Agreement Registration form. The new owner must complete the Transfer of Coverage portion of the Agreement Registration within sixty (60) days of change in ownership in order for the remainder of the Agreement to remain valid and not be automatically voided. The transfer of coverage must be to the same vocation. No additional fees will be charged if submitted within 60 days.

A $400 late fee will be applied for transfer of coverage from 61 days to 6 months after ownership change. After 6 months, transfer of coverage is not available.

Submit the completed form to any authorized Detroit service facility who will submit an online transfer via the Detroit Warranty System. Manual coverage transfers will no longer be accepted.

3. The previous owner shall transfer to the new owner all available service records, repair orders and other such related documents.

4. This Agreement applies to a failure of a qualified part on Detroit engines operating in the U.S. and/ or Canada.

5. Like-replacement parts or engines used to replace qualified parts under this Agreement will assume the identity of parts replaced and be entitled to the remaining coverage if any, except as limited under Coverage Limitations (Sect. III.-C).

6. Repairs under the terms of this Agreement will be performed during normal working hours at any authorized Detroit service facilities place of business.
