Project Grant R56DE033249
- The federal Project Grant award of $401,500 from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) will support research at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport (LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport) to investigate fundamental aspects of the innate immune response to SARS-CoV-2 within the salivary gland. The 2-year project aims to explore how antigen presentation mechanisms may shape or...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) awarded a $198,000 Project Grant under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to conduct research on integrating population-wide oral microbiome data to better understand health differences in the United States. The project, which will run from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027, aims to disentangle how an individual's background and socioeconomic factors...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) awarded a $432,209 Project Grant under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (CFDA 93.121) program to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for a 2-year period starting on August 1, 2023. The funding supports research to investigate the role of the CXCL10-CXCR3 axis in the compounding effects of diabetes mellitus on periodontitis. Specifically, the research aims to further elucidate the role of CXCL10 in the...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) provides $226,500 to investigate how oral bacterial pathogens affect aging-associated immune responses and whether inhibition of the inflammatory marker CD38 can alleviate inflammatory bone loss and aging-associated immune responses induced by oral pathogens. The project, conducted by the Medical University of South Carolina, aims...
- This $515,926 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) will fund research to develop an in vitro gingival (gum) tissue system to study the role of microbial communities on oral health and disease. The 5-year project, beginning June 1, 2024, will be conducted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Office of Research Administration-Lowell. The key objectives are: (1) developing and validating a microphysiological system to study oral...
- This Project Grant award of $470,279 from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121), aims to study the impact of bacterial oxidative stress responses on the ecology and pathogenicity of oral streptococci. The research project, conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), will identify and characterize the hypochlorous acid (HOSCN) response mechanisms in oral streptococci, particularly...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) awarded a $572,261 Project Grant under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to examine the impacts of structural racism and discrimination on oral health treatment disparities and outcomes for Hispanic children. The research project, titled "Examining Impacts of Structural Racism and Discrimination on Hispanic Treatment Differences and Oral...
- This Project Grant award of $2,549,080.00, provided by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866), supports research to investigate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the cerebrovasculature as a risk factor for vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID). The award, with a performance period from August 11, 2025 to July 31, 2029, will fund the University of Illinois to: Determine how prior SARS-CoV-2 infection influences...
- This $314,000 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121), will support research to gain insights into the evolution of fungal resistance in the oral environment of HIV-positive individuals. The research will leverage an existing patient dataset to: 1) use long-read sequencing to profile the fungal mycobiome in patient saliva and caries samples, and 2) perform longitudinal...
- This federal Project Grant award of $311,000.00 from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) will be used by the University of Washington to conduct research to characterize the microbial and inflammatory state within distant clinically healthy tissues in patients with active periodontal disease. The research aims to increase understanding of how inflammation is triggered and maintained during the...
The University of Illinois, under a $581,037 Project Grant award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Trans-NIH Research Support Program (CFDA 93.310), will conduct research to investigate the mechanisms underlying oral post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) in minority populations. The key objectives are to: 1) analyze the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on oral PASC indicators and perturbations in oral immune surveillance in Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White cohorts; and 2) examine how pre-existing intracellular periodontal pathogens may enhance the risk of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection and promote oral PASC. Through comprehensive profiling of immune cells and mediators in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid, as well as in vitro infection models, the researchers aim to uncover novel mechanisms linking periodontal disease, COVID-19, and oral health outcomes in underserved minority populations. The project will run from September 2023 through September 2024.
