This Project Grant award, totaling $470,279.00, was provided by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (CFDA 93.121) program. The award will fund research to examine the interactions between health-associated and disease-associated oral Streptococcus bacteria, and the role of the antimicrobial compound hypothiocyanous acid (HOSCN) in modulating the oral microbiome.
Specifically, the project aims to identify and characterize the mechanisms by which oral Streptococcus species respond to HOSCN stress, as well as investigate the impact of salivary peroxidase and its products on the interactions between cariogenic and non-cariogenic Streptococcus species in both planktonic and biofilm growth conditions. The results are expected to provide a molecular-level understanding of how the pro- and anti-oxidant components of saliva drive competition between these important oral bacteria. The project will be conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham over a period of 5 years, from March 2025 to February 2030.
