Project Grant R21EY038431
- The National Eye Institute awarded The University of Iowa $440,263 on May 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to investigate osmotic regulation in cone dystrophy with supernormal rod response (CDSRR), a rare inherited retinal disease causing progressive vision loss beginning in early childhood. The project uses state-of-the-art imaging biomarkers and transcriptomics to evaluate osmotic regulation in mouse models of CDSRR, a disease caused by mutations in the KV2.1/KV8.2...
- The National Eye Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded The Ohio State University $620,217 on September 22, 2025, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop an insulin-accelerated surgical approach to pre-retinal gene therapy for inherited retinal disease. The funded research tests a novel adeno-associated virus (AAV) administration method that combines a pre-retinal delivery approach with adjuvant...
- The National Eye Institute awarded The Schepens Eye Research Institute, Inc. $881,797 on May 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop mini-USH2A gene therapy for Usher Syndrome Type 2A. The award funds characterization and functional evaluation of mini-USH2A-4 and generation of novel mini-USH2A constructs through sequential deletion of EGF-laminin domains. Work includes investigation of biochemical interactions using cell and animal models, development of an...
- The National Eye Institute awarded the Trustees of Indiana University $747,000 on September 15, 2025, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to investigate how retinal plasticity and synaptic remodeling contribute to functional recovery following gene therapy for inherited retinal degenerations. The funded research addresses mechanisms underlying visual recovery in gene replacement therapy for achromatopsia, a form of inherited retinal degeneration. Work includes two specific aims:...
- The National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute awarded a $1.792 million Cooperative Agreement to the University of California, Los Angeles on September 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867). The award funds development of adeno-associated virus vectors incorporating cell-type-specific cis-regulatory modules to target 23 distinct retinal cell types in primates, enabling precise labeling and functional manipulation of specific cells. The project aims to dissect...
- The National Eye Institute, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $100,228 on December 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867). The recipient will conduct preclinical research on autologous transplantation of genetically modified induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to treat autosomal dominant retinal disorders, specifically RPE65 D477G mutations causing retinitis...
- The National Eye Institute (part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health) awarded West Virginia University Research Corporation $2.739 million on September 15, 2025, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop therapies for photoreceptor outer segment defects associated with blinding diseases. The research identifies and develops therapeutic interventions for defects in protein networks essential to photoreceptor outer segment morphogenesis....
- The National Eye Institute, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Wisconsin–Madison $689,706 on August 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to establish human stem cell-derived retinal organoids as functional models of human retina for studying disease and testing therapies. The award funds research to identify and overcome limitations in retinal organoids derived from human pluripotent stem cells....
- The National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute awarded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill $603,053 in project grant funding on April 15, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop and optimize a gene therapy for IMPG2-associated retinal degeneration. The recipient will leverage mouse models and human retinal organoids derived from patient-induced pluripotent stem cells and gene-edited embryonic stem cells to engineer and test an adeno-associated virus...
- The National Eye Institute, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $458,288 to the University of Washington on May 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867, Assistance Listing designation Project Grant). The award funds research into stimulation of regeneration in the human retina. The investigator team will test whether expressing the proneural regulatory gene ASCL1 in Müller glia can induce regeneration of retinal neurons in human tissue and adult non-human...
The National Eye Institute, an office of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded The University of Iowa $427,625 on September 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop mutation-independent gene therapy vectors for CEP290-associated Leber congenital amaurosis, a hereditary retinal dystrophy causing severe vision loss in infants and early childhood. The recipient will engineer and evaluate adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors that use a unidirectional DNA recombination system to deliver and reconstitute the CEP290 gene, which is too large for conventional gene therapy approaches. The study will assess the therapeutic efficacy of two sets of AAV-CEP290 vectors in two CEP290-LCA mouse models and compare results with existing split-intein-based CEP290 vectors. The work aims to establish a generic, mutation-independent platform applicable across diverse CEP290 mutations and to advance large-gene delivery capabilities in gene therapy broadly. Performance occurs at Iowa City, Iowa. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028.
