This research initiative investigates the role of matriptase, a cell-surface anchored serine protease, in corneal epithelial homeostasis and repair. The project delivers basic and translational science research utilizing novel matriptase knockout mouse models and...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Illinois received a $497,740 Project Grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI) under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867), effective April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2031. Principal Investigator Elmira Jalilian will conduct research on neuro-epithelial interactions in corneal disease and repair, with performance at the Chicago, Illinois campus. This fundamental research initiative investigates how corneal nerves—specifically the V1 ophthalmic...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of California, San Francisco received a $900,600 Project Grant from the National Eye Institute under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2027. This award supports research to advance understanding of corneal limbal stem cells (LSCs) during wound healing, specifically investigating how injury impacts the limbal stem cell niche and the distinct roles of inner limbal stem cells (ILSCs) and outer...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Eye Institute (NEI) awarded The Schepens Eye Research Institute, Inc. a Project Grant totaling $540,213 under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to investigate the fibrosis-immunity interface in corneal transplantation. Beginning August 1, 2025, and extending through July 31, 2030, this research program will deliver scientific findings aimed at improving corneal transplant survival rates by elucidating the mechanisms by which myofibroblasts...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Eye Institute (NEI), under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867), awarded The Schepens Eye Research Institute Inc. a $1.79M Project Grant (awarded September 1, 2025; completion date August 31, 2027) to investigate non-invasive transpalpebral electrical stimulation (TPES) as a therapeutic intervention for diabetic keratopathy (DK). This research addresses a significant clinical need, as current treatment options are costly, uncomfortable, and difficult...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Houston System received a $863,500 Project Grant award from the National Eye Institute (NEI) under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867), effective September 30, 2025, with a completion date of July 31, 2027. The research project investigates the mechanisms of scarless corneal wound healing by comparing the regenerative capabilities of the African spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) to standard laboratory mice (Mus musculus) following alkali burn...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Eye Institute (NEI), under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867), awarded The Leland Stanford Junior University a $257,785 Project Grant effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2030, to investigate novel therapeutic approaches for Traumatic Optic Neuropathy (TON). The research will generate scientific findings and therapeutic insights focused on modulating DNA damage response pathways, specifically through Checkpoint Kinase 1 (CHK1)...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Iowa received a $641,479 Project Grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI) under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867), effective May 1, 2026, through February 28, 2031. The award funds research to identify the molecular signals and mechanisms leading to the onset and progression of Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD), a blinding disease affecting 4-7% of individuals over age 40 with an estimated annual economic burden of $300 million....
The National Eye Institute (NEI), under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867), awarded the University of Missouri System $430,825 on May 1, 2026, to support a two-year research project investigating corneal damage resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI). The research will generate empirical findings on the neuroinflammatory mechanisms linking TBI-induced cranial dura mater (CDM) injury to corneal dysfunction through the trigeminal ganglion sensory pathway. The project will produce novel understanding of how decorin, a small leucine-rich extracellular matrix proteoglycan, modulates cornea-CDM crosstalk and will identify potential therapeutic strategies to prevent vision loss associated with TBI. The research deliverables will include in vivo experimental data from established mouse models characterizing TBI/CDM-injury-induced neuroinflammatory responses in the cornea (Specific Aim 1) and preclinical evidence evaluating decorin's therapeutic potential to regulate TBI/CDM-mediated corneal pathology (Specific Aim 2). Upon completion on April 30, 2028, the findings will contribute to the NEI's mission of eliminating vision loss by advancing the scientific understanding of TBI-related ocular complications and informing the development of targeted treatment interventions for this understudied vision loss mechanism.Federal Grant Award Summary
