- The National Institute on Aging awarded Duke University $1.597 million on September 15, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support research on epitranscriptomic regulation of microglia in Alzheimer's disease. The research investigates how m6a methylation of adenosine residues in messenger RNA regulates microglial cell function and transitions between resting and activated states during Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis, with the goal of identifying novel...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Emory University $643,613 on April 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to discover glycosylation-based disease processes and identify glyco-biomarkers and targets for improving Alzheimer's disease diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention. The recipient will perform innovative research using an integrated platform of intact glycopeptide-based quantitative glycoproteomics and systems biology to elucidate brain glycoproteome alterations in...
- The National Institute on Aging (NIA), under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866), awarded a $1,684,689 project grant to Weill Medical College of Cornell University to study the role of microglial lysosomes in the degradation of amyloid-beta, a key pathological feature of Alzheimer's disease. The 3-year project aims to characterize the process of "digestive exophagy" used by microglia to limit the expansion of amyloid-beta plaques, as well as explore the effects of genetic...
- This $1,425,000 project grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866), will fund research into neuronal senescence and inflammation in Alzheimer's disease. The Salk Institute for Biological Studies will study the interaction between cellular senescence and inflammation in induced neurons derived from Alzheimer's patients and healthy aged controls. Researchers will examine differences in gene expression and epigenetic...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Virginia $583,815 on August 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support research into oligodendrocyte lineage dysfunction during aging and Alzheimer's disease. The project aims to understand how myelin loss—a pathology common to both aging and Alzheimer's disease—develops in the central nervous system and to identify therapeutic targets for cognitive impairment. The research focuses on oligodendrocyte precursor...
The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $442,750 to the University of California, Davis on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866, assistance type: Project Grant) to investigate galectin-12's role in neuroinflammation and Alzheimer's disease progression. The funded research examines how metabolic stress triggers Alzheimer's disease by enhancing inflammation, with a focus on lipid droplet accumulation in microglia—a prevalent dysfunctional cell type in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. The project aims to generate in vivo proof-of-concept that suppressing galectin-12, a lipid droplet-associated protein, reduces lipid droplet accumulation and pro-inflammatory microglial activation to help slow Alzheimer's progression. Preliminary data show galectin-12 is expressed in both human and mouse microglia, its expression increases when microglia are activated by amyloid-beta oligomers, and galectin-12 knockdown reduces both pro-inflammatory phenotype and lipid droplet accumulation. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028. Work is performed in Sacramento, California.
