The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has awarded a $1,639,075 Project Grant (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) to North Carolina State University (NC State) to investigate the effects of combined flavonoid-rich diet and physical exercise on age-related cognitive changes, mediated by the gut microbiome. The study will examine the cognitive impacts of a 12-week blueberry intake regimen, both with and without regular moderate exercise, in an older adult population experiencing age-related cognitive declines. It will also investigate the associations between observed cognitive changes and microbiome alterations using shotgun metagenomics. Additionally, a mouse model will be used to isolate the mechanistic role of the gut microbiome in linking diet, exercise, and cognitive outcomes in aging. This multifaceted project aims to determine how dietary flavonoids and physical activity can influence cognitive change in the aging population through gut microbiome modulation. The award period runs from September 1, 2024 to April 30, 2029.
