The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Toledo $984,496 on August 1, 2026, under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) to acquire a cyber-enabled RapiFlex MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometer with advanced imaging capability for its multi-user instrumentation facility in Ottawa Hills, Ohio. The new instrument will replace a 16-year-old MALDI mass spectrometry system at end-of-life and enable research currently impossible at the institution. The spectrometer provides substantially improved mass resolution, mass accuracy, sensitivity, and spatial resolution, supporting investigation of harmful algal toxins in Lake Erie and enabling researchers to visualize the distribution of drugs, toxins, lipids, and biomolecules directly within tissues, cells, polymers, and environmental samples. The acquisition will initially support 20 primary research groups and regional collaborators, with anticipated expansion over time. A unique feature is cyber-enabled remote access: researchers, educators, and students from institutions lacking advanced instrumentation will operate the instrument from their own classrooms and laboratories using remote-control software and live video. The facility will support more than 130 researchers and provide workforce training for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers. The award will also support undergraduate and graduate courses and industrial users. The period of performance runs through July 31, 2029.
