The National Science Foundation awarded the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee $538,699 under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074) on October 1, 2022 to acquire a Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris mass spectrometer. This new mass spectrometry instrumentation will enhance UWM's analytical infrastructure and create new research and learning experiences at all levels. It will provide opportunities for underrepresented and first-generation STEM students, outreach programs for K-12 students and teachers, and hands-on training for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers. The mass spectrometer will be used by a diverse group of early-career and senior researchers at UWM and regional universities for proteomics, metabolomics, and high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis to advance cross-disciplinary research in biochemistry, microbiology, neurochemistry, environmental chemistry, and biomaterials engineering.
