This $188,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) will support the acquisition of a Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MALDI-TOF MS) at Tulane University in New Orleans. The new high-resolution, tandem mass spectrometry instrument will be utilized by researchers across the departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Physics at Tulane, as well as at the participating institutions of Dillard University and Loyola University. This specialized mass spectrometry capability will enhance existing analytical infrastructure and enable new research investigations into the structural characterization of large biomolecules such as peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, and polymers. The award also includes educational outreach to high school students, 80% of whom are African American, to provide hands-on learning about polymer analysis using MALDI-TOF MS. This award, effective from September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026, reflects NSF's mission to build national research capacity and broaden participation in STEM fields.
