The National Science Foundation's Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program has awarded a $350,000 Project Grant to the College of Charleston to acquire a MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometer instrument. This state-of-the-art equipment will enable new research directions, encourage cross-disciplinary collaborations, and provide hands-on training for a diverse population of undergraduate students and researchers at the college and across the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The mass spectrometer will be used to advance research projects related to the fate of pharmaceuticals in the environment, biocompatible materials, and the structure, function, and evolution of polypeptides, among other applications. This award aims to increase participation of underrepresented persons in research, better prepare students for future STEM careers, and provide access to mass spectrometry resources for institutions in the region with limited capabilities. The project is expected to be completed by August 31, 2026.
