Project Grant 20266701746740
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Auburn University $633,194 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 15, 2026, to develop a rapid, non-destructive, continuous detection method for high-risk Salmonella and Campylobacter strains in poultry products by combining a color-changing sensor with machine learning models. The project will test the methodology on poultry meat to validate detection accuracy and speed, with the goal...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. $299,991 on March 1, 2026, to develop detection and sampling methods that enable poultry producers and processors to comply with the USDA FSIS Salmonella Framework for raw poultry products under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The research delivers three specific products: optimal environmental sampling methods for poultry production facilities; validated...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded Auburn University a $2.385 million Cooperative Agreement on September 22, 2025, under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) to develop safe processing and byproduct management practices for the U.S. poultry industry. The award funds four integrated research activities. Auburn will develop black soldier fly larvae products with enhanced anti-salmonella properties for poultry feed or...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Cornell University $632,445 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 15, 2026, to support research addressing recurring, emerging, and persisting (REP) strains of nontyphoidal Salmonella associated with foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States. Nontyphoidal Salmonella accounts for an estimated 26 percent of foodborne deaths annually in the United States, with seven REP strains...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Auburn University $591,500 on December 15, 2025, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to conduct research on black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as a mechanism for upcycling poultry processing waste into feed products with enhanced antimicrobial properties. The research objectives address gaps in knowledge regarding the use of BSFL reared on poultry processing solids to generate feed enriched with...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Auburn University $300,000 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to investigate feeding strategies that improve fertility and hatchability in broiler breeder chickens. Auburn will conduct a controlled animal experiment comparing daily-fed and every-other-day feeding programs to determine how restrictive feeding affects growth, energy use, and hormone production—all linked...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Tuskegee University $749,985 under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants program (CFDA 10.216) on December 15, 2025, to enhance food safety by studying Salmonella contamination across the poultry supply chain from farms to processing and distribution. The project will deploy GenopathX, a rapid detection tool, to map Salmonella presence and types at various supply chain stages through collection and...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Auburn University $749,002 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on April 1, 2026, to investigate the impact of antimicrobial pollution from poultry production on honey bee health. The research combines controlled and field experiments to examine how exposure to antimicrobial resistance genes and antimicrobial residues affects bee immunity, survival, and microbial composition. Auburn will...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Regents of the University of Minnesota $633,750 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 15, 2026, to develop and implement a Salmonella bait-capture pipeline for strain-level typing and risk assessment in poultry production and human health. The deliverable is a culture-independent method to identify and characterize all Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains present in a primary...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas A&M Agrilife Research $300,000 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to develop and optimize nanotechnology-based methods for detecting Salmonella in poultry products. The work builds on prior research using nanobeads to capture and release cancer cells from blood; this project applies similar technology through antibody-coated hollow glass microspheres (HGMS) to...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Auburn University $633,750 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on September 1, 2026, to investigate the conditions in the chicken gut that influence Salmonella infection and persistence in broiler poultry. The research addresses the central challenge that several Salmonella strains causing human illness do not produce overt clinical disease in birds, creating asymptomatic carriage that transmits foodborne pathogens to consumers. The project examines how production-related environmental stress, particularly heat stress within the production facility, increases broiler susceptibility to Salmonella infection through effects on gut health, the gut microbiome, and stress-related neurochemicals such as norepinephrine and epinephrine produced at the host-microbiome interface along the intestinal mucosa. Identification of these environmental and physiological factors will support design of novel husbandry and preventive approaches to reduce or eliminate Salmonella carriage in poultry and enhance food safety. Work is performed at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2030. The award is a Project Grant under the Assistance Listing 10.310 program, which supports competitive research, education, extension, and integrated grants to advance agricultural science across six farm bill priority areas including animal health and production and food safety, nutrition, and health.
