Project Grant 20266702145697
- This $591,324 federal Project Grant award, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA 10.310 program, will support research at the University of Tennessee to develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biobased fertilizer/soil enhancers from black soldier fly (BSF) products. The key objectives are to address knowledge gaps and demonstrate the feasibility of using...
- Prairie View A&M University received a $599,698 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants program. The grant funds a research project to enhance food security and promote more sustainable agricultural practices through the use of black soldier fly larvae. Specifically, the university will rear black soldier fly larvae to convert organic wastes from animal and food...
- Biomilitus LLC received a $254,689 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation on February 1, 2021 to optimize black soldier fly genetics and husbandry for industrialization of organic waste biocnversion. The award was made under the NSF's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), which seeks to improve quality of life and economic strength through engineering research and education. Specifically, the nine-month project focused on developing and refining techniques for breeding black...
- This federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (CFDA 10.212) provides $125,000 to Prag LLC to automate the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) composting and preservation process into a single, off-grid system. The goal is to efficiently produce preserved larvae as an economical feed source for local farmers like Mr. Plasencia, reducing his time and costs...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), under the Integrated Programs (CFDA 10.303), provides $996,545.00 to the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville to conduct research on the potential of harvested insects and commercially raised crickets as sustainable sources of methionine for organic poultry diets. The key objectives are to: 1) analyze the microbiological safety and nutrient composition of insect-based meals to formulate broiler...
- This $300,000 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will fund a study on using coprophagous (dung-feeding) flies as biomonitors for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in terrestrial environments. The key objectives are to (1) determine the ingestion and persistence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes in flies, (2) assess the excretion of these AMR...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $717,070 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to The Ohio State University. The grant, awarded on September 1, 2024, supports a multidisciplinary research initiative to develop sustainable extraction methods for obtaining protein, lipids, and valuable components from insect meal. This will enable the creation of innovative food products using 3-D...
- This $300,000 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will support research on feeding programs for broiler breeder chickens at Auburn University. The project aims to investigate how restrictive feeding strategies, such as daily-fed versus every-other-day feeding, impact growth, energy use, and hormone production in breeder chickens, which are linked to...
- This $650,000 Project Grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The grant aims to develop evidence-based, multi-stage recommendations for improving sustainability of small broiler enterprises, focusing on microbial safety, product quality, and cost-effectiveness. Key objectives include: (1) applying probiotics to reduce Salmonella contamination in...
- This $300,000 Project Grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The objective is to develop and implement effective mitigation strategies at the production level to limit Salmonella colonization in chickens and reduce the transmission of Salmonella to poultry products and humans. The grant will fund research to evaluate the efficacy of combining...
This federal Project Grant award of $591,500 was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The objective of the project is to improve understanding of the anti-pathogen activity and nutritional composition of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) reared on poultry processing waste, with the goal of developing BSFL-based poultry feed products that have enhanced antimicrobial properties. The research aims to 1) assess the BSFL's ability to synthesize antimicrobial peptides when fed a diet containing food-borne pathogens, 2) evaluate the stability of these peptides after BSFL harvesting, 3) characterize the nutrient composition of BSFL reared on poultry waste, and 4) analyze the economic and environmental performance of the BSFL biorefinery system. This 4-year project will be conducted at Auburn University starting December 2025.
