About this program

The National Institutes of Health consolidated the Mental Health Research Career/Scientist Development Awards program (CFDA 93.281) into the broader Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) effective fiscal year 2013 and will not issue new awards under 93.281; applicants must pursue funding under 93.242 instead.

The program funded early-career and mid-career researcher development in mental health science, including basic neuroscience and behavioral research on mental illness, behavioral disorders, HIV/AIDS, and related neurobiological mechanisms. Representative recent awards included investigations of synaptic mechanisms in cognitive function, brain connectivity in autism spectrum disorders, depression neuroinflammation interactions, pharmacological interventions for pediatric conditions, and HIV treatment adherence. Grant magnitudes ranged from roughly $54 thousand to $987 thousand, with many awards in the $150 thousand to $750 thousand band.

Between 1979 and September 2012, the program distributed 2,258 awards totaling $411.2 million in federal obligations, almost entirely from the National Institutes of Health ($410.8 million across 2,257 awards). The portfolio was predominantly Project Grants (91 percent, 2,059 awards) with a smaller share of Block Grants (9 percent, 199 awards). Award volume declined sharply after 2008—from 72 awards in 2008 to 17 annually in 2009–2011 and only 2 in 2012—signaling the program's wind-down into consolidation.

The most recent grant award dates to September 19, 2012 (over 14 years ago). No new grant opportunities are currently open under this Assistance Listing. Organizations pursuing mental health research career development funding must apply under CFDA 93.242 Mental Health Research Grants, which absorbed this program's functions beginning in fiscal year 2013.

Starting in FY2013, the 93.242 Mental Health Research Grants CFDA program reflects the consolidation of NIMH's former CFDA numbers, 93.282 Mental Health National Research Service Awards for Research Training and 93.281 Mental Health Research Career/Scientist Development Awards into 93.242 Mental Health Research Grants. This program will not be used to fund new projects. Please refer to 93.242 for new funding opportunities.
