About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency, through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, seeks to fund promising basic through translational research that accelerates drug discovery and therapeutic development for hearing restoration following military-relevant auditory system injury. The FY26 Hearing Restoration Research Program Focused Research Award supports preclinical studies and clinical research (excluding clinical trials, tinnitus research, and vestibular research) that aligns with at least one of three designated focus areas: improving translation of biological regeneration/repair mechanisms, developing diagnostic tests differentiating sensory/neural/synaptic/central processing disorders, or developing reliable in vitro human models. Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations, with independent investigators eligible as Principal Investigators regardless of citizenship status. Applications undergo a two-tier review process evaluating technical merit based on research idea/rationale, research strategy and feasibility, impact, and personnel, followed by programmatic review assessing adherence to program intent, contribution to portfolio, relative impact, and military health relevance. The pre-application letter of intent deadline is August 25, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with full applications due September 10, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
The program anticipates funding approximately one Funding Level 1 application at a maximum of $400,000 for a two-year period and approximately two Funding Level 2 applications at a maximum of $1.2 million each for three-year periods, with total FY26 appropriation of $5.0 million. Funding Level 2 includes a new Partnering Principal Investigator Option allowing collaboration between an Initiating PI and Partnering PI, with combined budgets subject to the per-award cap. Peer review is scheduled for November 2026 with programmatic review in January 2027, and awards are anticipated no later than September 30, 2027. Research will be conducted at eligible extramural and intramural organizations domestically and internationally, with obligated funds expiring for use on September 30, 2032.
