About this opportunity

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is seeking information regarding vendor capability to provide two-axis Thruster Gimbal Assembly mechanisms for kilowatt-class Hall thrusters, with RFI responses due July 24, 2026. JPL may use responses to inform future Small Business Set-Aside procurement decisions under NAICS code 336414 (Guided Missile and Space Vehicle Manufacturing, 1,300-employee size standard).

JPL requires gimbals compatible with both the MaSMi Hall thruster (JPL-developed) and the NASA-H71M Hall thruster (NASA Glenn Research Center-developed) for small-satellite propulsion integration. Target specifications include two-axis orthogonal design with 15 degrees minimum angular range per axis, 0.1 degrees pointing accuracy, mass under 5 kg, mounting footprint under 24 cm x 24 cm, height under 15 cm, power consumption under 20 W maximum (idle under 5 W), 28 V nominal input voltage, minimum operating temperature of -40 degrees Celsius, position locking capability for launch, and capability to handle 15 W heat flux while remaining below maximum operating temperature. Vendors must address both thruster interface requirements including specific mounting patterns and propellant line and harness routing, environmental survivability (launch vibration and shock, thermal vacuum, radiation tolerance), technology readiness level, and flight heritage.

JPL indicates near-term orders within one year would likely be one flight gimbal for ground testing, while a future mission approximately three years out could require 2–8 units for flight operations plus additional ground test units. Vendors must provide non-binding Rough Order of Magnitude pricing and lead time for both single-unit and ten-unit quantities. Written questions are due by June 24, 2026, with JPL responding by July 15, 2026. A Questions and Answers document and Addendum 2 clarifications are available in SAM.gov attachments. Contact Dominique Reyes, JPL Subcontracts Manager, at Dominique.reyes@jpl.nasa.gov or (626) 659-3497.
