About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for a Request for Information (RFI) issued by JPL regarding a two-axis gimbal for kilowatt-class Hall thrusters, updated July 15, 2026. The document contains four question-and-answer pairs addressing vendor inquiries about the procurement opportunity.

JPL is seeking information about the suitability of available gimbals for missions to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Geostationary Orbit (GEO), and deep space applications, with particular interest in radiation tolerance of baseline design components. Regarding quantities and timeframes, JPL indicates that near-term orders within the next year would likely be for one flight gimbal unit for ground testing purposes, while a future mission approximately three years out could require 2-8 units for flight operations along with additional ground test units. JPL requests that vendors provide Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) pricing and lead time information for both single-unit and ten-unit quantities. The RFI contains all currently available design requirements and technical information at this stage, with no comprehensive technical data package available. JPL emphasizes that there is no commitment or guarantee to proceed with a formal Request for Proposal, and while efforts are made to ensure accuracy of RFI responses, the eventual RFP and associated documentation will serve as the standard for proposal evaluation. The RFI does not specify association with any particular mission program such as SR-1 Freedom.

DR-2652-5042026 Two-Axis Gimbal for Kilowatt-Class Hall Thrusters Request for Information (RFI)

Q&A (Updated 7/15/2026)

Disclaimer: There is no commitment or guarantee on the part of JPL to move forward with a Request for Proposal (RFP) at this time.

While JPL makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of written responses to these questions, the RFP and associated documentation is the standard by which all proposals will be evaluated. JPL makes no assurances that the RFP will align 100% with these responses.

Question

Question Answer

Are you looking for LEO or GEO rated systems? Or just knowledge on both?

We are looking for information about the suitability of available gimbals for missions to LEO, GEO, and deep space. It would be helpful if you can provide information on radiation tolerance of parts used in the baseline design.

Our cost and schedule (although low on both) is dependent on quantities as well. Is there any idea/information on quantities and timeframes of when these might be requested?

While our long-term needs are not finalized, it would be helpful to know the ROM price and lead time of 1 flight gimbal units

vs. 10 flight units. Any order placed within the next year would probably be for one unit only (for use in ground testing), while a future mission (e.g., 3 years from now) could require 2-8 units for flight along with additional units for ground testing.

Question

Question Answer

For the “comment on how cost may change” section, are there any suggestions/ideas on what those changes may be?

This section is intended to help us understand where there is room to tighten the requirements we have listed, or conversely where the requirements are already too stringent. For example, if your existing gimbal height is less than the requested 15 cm, how much less is the height? If the angular pointing accuracy needed to be increased, would the impact on cost be dramatic (requiring complete redesign) or relatively modest? Answers can be qualitative.

Is there a more comprehensive design requirement or technical data package for the RFI? Is this for SR-1

Freedom?

The RFI contains all currently available design requirements and technical information for this opportunity. We do not have a more comprehensive technical data package at this stage.

As for whether this relates to SR-1 Freedom, the RFI does not specify an association with that mission.
