1.2 DEFINITIONS
1.2.1 As-Built Drawings
As-built drawings are developed and maintained by the Contractor and depict actual conditions, including deviations from the Contract Documents. These deviations and additions may result from coordination required by, but not limited to: contract modifications; official responses to Contractor submitted Requests for Information; direction from the Contracting Officer; designs which are the responsibility of the Contractor, and differing site conditions. Maintain the as-builts throughout construction as red-lined hard copies on site or red-lined PDF files . These files serve as the basis for the creation of the record drawings.
1.2.2 Record Drawings
The record drawings are the final compilation of actual conditions reflected in the as-built drawings.
1.3 SOURCE DRAWING FILES
Request the full set of electronic drawings, in the source format, for Record Drawing preparation, after award and at least 30 days prior to required use.
1.3.1 Terms and Conditions
Data contained on these electronic files must not be used for any purpose other than as a convenience in the preparation of construction drawings and data for the referenced project. Any other use or reuse shall be at the sole risk of the Contractor and without liability or legal exposure to
Amendment 2 SECTION 01 78 00 Page 1 the Government. The Contractor must make no claim and waives to the fullest extent permitted by law, any claim or cause of action of any nature against the Government, its agents or sub consultants that may arise out of or in connection with the use of these electronic files. The Contractor must, to the fullest extent permitted by law, indemnify and hold the Government harmless against all damages, liabilities or costs, including reasonable attorney's fees and defense costs, arising out of or resulting from the use of these electronic files.
These electronic CAD drawing files are not construction documents.
Differences may exist between the CAD files and the corresponding construction documents. The Government makes no representation regarding the accuracy or completeness of the electronic CAD files, nor does it make representation to the compatibility of these files with the Contractor hardware or software. In the event that a conflict arises between the signed and sealed construction documents prepared by the Government and the furnished Source drawing files, the signed and sealed construction documents govern. The Contractor is responsible for determining if any conflict exists. Use of these Source Drawing files does not relieve the Contractor of duty to fully comply with the contract documents, including and without limitation, the need to check, confirm and coordinate the work of all contractors for the project. If the Contractor uses, duplicates or modifies these electronic source drawing files for use in producing construction drawings and data related to this contract, remove all previous indicia of ownership (seals, logos, signatures, initials and dates).

These standards are designed to guide The sheet numbering system is flexible
1 Introduction These standards are designed to guide military, civilian, and A-E Firm/contractor CAD operators in producing engineering drawings for Vandenberg AFB. Basic computer literacy in the Microsoft Windows environment is assumed. The method employed in creating drawings is not
The sheet-numbering system is flexible enough to allow sheets to be added throughout the design phase, while keeping related sheets together to help those doing the construction. When changes need to be made to developing as-builts, the person making the changes will find it much easier p y g g dictated, as long as the final product complies with these standards.
Purpose of standards The immediate benefits of CAD standards are many: consistent CAD products for g g if the file was developed according to standards.
Finally, standards ensure that all users approach the use of CAD in a similar way.
This will eliminate the need for individuals to learn techniques or solve problems thaty p customers; uniform requirements for A-E deliverables; sharing of products and expertise; and collection, manipulation, and exchange of database information.
Standards for file organization and graphics are necessary because the CAD data will be to learn techniques or solve problems that have already been made into standard procedures.
Vandenberg Air Force Base are necessary because the CAD data will be shared repeatedly from the moment it is created throughout the facility’s life.
First, CAD files must be standardized because they are shared during the design phase. Two people may share the task of d l i fil th ti j t
This document will serve as a guide in setting up, creating, organizing, and checking the project drawings to ensure they are compliant with standards. These standards are set forth by the Tri-Service A/E/C CAD Standard for Department of Defense CAD d i d b t t d tdeveloping one file, or the entire project design team may need shared access to one file. If that shared file does not contain the required information or is set up improperly, other users will be prevented from, or find difficulty, working with that file.
drawings and by contract documents.
Note: These standards are for AutoCAD versions 2000 -PRESENT. 30th Civil Engineer Squadron no longer supports submittals below AutoCAD version 2000 toNote: AutoCAD’s external reference file feature provides a good way of sharing files.
This will be discussed in further detail later.
Second, these standards assist in the sharing of printed data during construction and as-built development. Contractors require submittals below AutoCAD version 2000 to include all supporting files (i.e. external references, blocks, etc).
3Chapter 1 Introduction p q legible, consistent and understandable sheets.
2 Start-up Guide Copying Files
There are templates, standards, and line type files on the Vandenberg AFB CAD Standards CD provided with this guide that should be copied to your local drive.
Template files (*.dwt) should be copied to AutoCAD’s template folder.
The standard (*.dws) and linetype files (*.lin *.mln *.shp *.shx) should be copied to AutoCAD’s support folder.
This is commonly located in: C:/program files/AutoCAD 2xxx/support/
I dditi t th fil b l d tt fil l b f d th CD Th filIn addition to these files, symbols and pattern files can also be found on the CD. These files can be referenced directly from the CD and do not need to be copied to your computer.
Using the Files
After you have successfully copied the files into their correct folders, begin by opening a session of AutoCADof AutoCAD.
To create a layout using a layout template:
1. Click Insert menu Layout > Layout From Template.
2. In the Select Template From File dialog box, select a drawing template file from the list.
3. Click Open.
4. In the Insert Layout(s) dialog box, select the layout template from the list. Click OK.
A new layout is created using the layout template you selected. The new layout is assigned the name Layout with the next number in the sequence and with the name of the imported layout attached.
For example, if you insert a layout called ANSI D from a layout template and you already have
4. In the Insert Layout(s) dialog box, select the layout template from the list. Click OK.

ANSI D.
Once you have a template open as a drawing file, you can begin drawing. Layers, linetypes, units, and dimension styles have already been pre-set for you.

Model files represent full-scale (1:1) drawings of building elements, systems, or information (e g the mechanical HVAC
Reference files (XREFs) (.dwg)
Reference files (external references or XREFs) enable designers to share drawing information electronically, eliminating the need to exchange hard copy drawings between the design disciplines.information (e.g., the mechanical HVAC system, the architectural floor plan, details, sections). Model files are used as components in creating plot-able sheet files.
The information contained within a model file for a discipline may be referenced by other disciplines to create the particular g p
The real-time access to the work of others ensures accuracy and consistency within a set of drawings and helps promote concurrent design efforts. No longer does one discipline have to wait until another discipline is nearly finished before theyp p model files or sheet files for the discipline.
A model file can be considered a “work in progress.” For instance, a mechanical engineer may reference the architect’s floor plan model file to begin development of the HVAC ductwork layout model file discipline is nearly finished before they begin their drawings.
Important:
When inserting XREF files into your drawing (Fig.1), there is an option you need to select so the file is saved using a “relative”HVAC ductwork layout model file.
Meanwhile, the architect can continue developing the floor plan to meet new requirements. Any changes to the floor plan would be immediately accessible to the mechanical engineer. The viewing of real-time updates eliminates a great deal of to select so the file is saved using a relative path (A). When the proper file structure is used, this will allow users to correctly load and view all XREF’s from any drawing in that project. Ensure the system variable ‘project name’ is set to the project number (XXXXXXxx) for ALL electronic files.p g frustration for other disciplines because it allows for on-the-spot rather than after-the-fact modifications.
Sheet Files (.dwg)
A sheet file is an assembly of referenced
A model files plus additional sheet-specific information (e.g., north arrows, scales, section cuts, title block information). Sheet files are viewed in paper space and are the actual CAD files that are “ready-to-plot” for design submittals, construction drawings, etc.
D i h ld NOT b t d i
Drawings should NOT be created in paper space. All drawings must be in model space, with a viewport(s) in paper space.

Fig. 2 Model File Naming Convention
Template Files (.dwt) Template files are for people who want to set-up a drawing quicker. In template files, most of the preparations have been taken care of for you including the title page, drawing units, and layout setup.
D i St d d Fil ( d )Drawing Standards File (.dws) Drawing standards files are for checking a drawing to be sure that it is compliant with this document. After completing a drawing, the .dws files should be loaded into the Batch Standards Checker to ensure all layers are compliant with this document.
Electronic Drawing File Naming conventionsg g Naming conventions for electronic drawing files (both model files and sheet files) allow CAD users to determine the contents of a drawing without actually displaying the file. They also provide a convenient and clear structure for organizing drawing files within project directories.
Model file naming conventiong The model file naming convention (Fig.2) has three mandatory fields and one optional.
The first field is used for a 6 to 8-character project number. Project numbers are acquired from the 30 CES project manager. The use of project numbers in file names are highly recommended, because it prevents the same file name from existing in different directories.
Following the project number the second field represents the Discipline Designator listed inFollowing the project number, the second field represents the Discipline Designator, listed in Appendix C.
The third field represents the Model File Type (Appendix B).
The final field is user definable. This field is optional and is limited to four characters.
This is the start of the file's text. The full file is on GovTribe.
File details come from the government source that posted it.
