LOW-DENSITY CELLULAR CONCRETE FOR GROUTING GUIDEWALL CRIBS

PART 1 GENERAL

The Lock and Dam 7 Guidewall Crib Repair project is intended to fill voids in the rock filled cribs formed by missing rock as well as the spaces between the existing rock. Rock fill has been lost due to past periods when scour occurred along the walls. It is not practical to dewater the guidewalls, therefore, the concrete will be placed in submerged cribs. The timber cribbing prevents access to the interior, so observation is limited to probing through voids, or by divers probing through the cribbing.

3.3 CONVEYING AND PLACING CONCRETE

The concrete shall be delivered to the site of the work and placement shall be completed within 1-1/2 hours after initial mixing at the plant. Concrete shall be conveyed from the mixer to the forms as rapidly as practicable by methods which prevent segregation or loss of ingredients. Concrete shall be deposited as close as possible to its final position. The contractor must coordinate with the COR and allow sufficient time and access for Government divers to inspect and approve formwork prior to concrete placement, observe during the placement operation, and inspect the finished surface once forms are removed.

3.3.1 Placement by Pump

Concrete may be conveyed by positive displacement pump when approved. The pumping equipment must be piston or squeeze pressure. The pipeline must be rigid steel or heavy-duty flexible hose. The inside diameter of the pipe must be at least three times the nominal maximum-size coarse aggregate in the concrete mixture to be pumped but not less than 4 inches. Do not use aluminum pipe.

3.4 COLD WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS

Contractor shall submit a cold weather concreting plan showing compliance with the requirements contained in this paragraph. Low Density cellular concrete shall not be mixed or placed during freezing weather, rain, snow, or ice unless special precautions are taken. Use special precautions when anticipating ambient or river water temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit within 8 hours after placement. Special precautions include, but are not limited to the use of Type III Cement, heating of the mixing water, or aggregates. The placing temperature of the concrete having a minimum dimension greater than 12 inches shall be between 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Materials entering the mixer shall be free from ice, snow, or frozen lumps. Salt, chemicals, or other materials shall not be mixed with the concrete to prevent freezing. Submit the proposed materials, methods, and protection for approval, if concrete is to be placed under cold weather conditions.

Test specimens taken from the mixes of each day's placement shall be prepared in sets of 6 cylinders: 3 for compressive strength testing and 3 for dry density testing. Test specimens shall be either 3" x 6" cylinders or 4" x 8" cylinders. Test specimens (for compressive strength and dry density) shall be cast in accordance with ASTM C 31/C 31M, except the molds shall be filled in one layer, with no rodding and only tapping the sides of the mold with a rubber hammer while the mold is being filled. Test cylinders shall be cast at the following rates:

(a) not less than once each day concrete is placed, within the first 25 cubic yards placed that day. AND

(b) not less than once for each 100 cubic yards of concrete placed.

In addition to the test specimens described above the contractor shall measure wet density during placement of the initial batch and make any adjustments necessary to achieve the specified cast density. Wet density testing of each subsequent batch shall be measured to ensure the specified cast density requirement is being met. The density of freshly mixed lightweight concrete shall be tested and reported in accordance with Test Method ASTM C 138.

3.5.2 Compressive Strength Testing

Compressive strength shall be tested in accordance with ASTM C 39/C 39M.

Of each set of three cylinders cast, one shall be tested at 7 days and two shall be tested at 28 days. The laboratory performing the tests shall conform with ASTM C 1077. Testing shall be performed by an independent testing laboratory at the expense of the Contractor.

3.5.3 Oven-Dry Density Testing

The oven-dry density of three test cylinders shall be determined by

ASTM C 567.

3.5.4 Reports

The results of all tests and quality control inspections conducted at the project site, as well as corrective action taken, shall be reported in the daily QC report on the date the test results are received by the Contractor or the date the inspection was performed. Copies of the concrete test result reports shall be compiled and delivered to the quality assurance representative weekly. This is in addition to copies of the test result reports provided in the Project Concrete Placement Report required after all concrete has been placed. The Contracting Officer has the right to examine all Contractor quality control records.
