In the rural Department of Intibucá, poverty is a great concern and 56.7 percent of school-aged children in Intibucá live in poverty. Poverty and food insecurity are closely linked with children facing numerous challenges related to nutrition.

Nationally, 23 percent of children under 5 are chronically malnourished while in Intibucá the figure is 48 percent. In education, reforms are underway to address needs, but there is still much to be done. The Honduran Secretariat of Education estimates that of every 100 students who enter first grade, only 22 finish ninth grade on time and national literacy tests in 2013 revealed significant gaps in early grade reading.

CRS Honduras’ Food for Education (FFE) project seeks to improve school attendance and literacy among school-age children in all 17 municipalities in Intibucá. In addition to providing daily school meals to nearly 54,000 pre-primary and primary students in 1,047 schools, CRS supports incentives like school transportation and school supplies for children to reduce access barriers. FFE improves school infrastructure, offers health and hygiene training, and engages community groups to increase community understanding of and support for the value of education. The project also provides training for teachers and school administrators on effective instruction and school management techniques, trains volunteer substitute teachers to ensure more consistent attendance of a qualified instructor in the classroom.
