About this file

This is a Geotechnical Investigation Report prepared by Laurel Environmental Geosciences, DPC for the New York State Parks Office of Recreation and Historic Preservation regarding foundation design for a proposed golf course maintenance storage shed at Robert Moses State Park, located at 600 Robert Moses State Parkway, Babylon, New York. The investigation was conducted on March 6, 2024, and consisted of a geophysical survey utilizing ground-penetrating radar and line locating equipment to identify subsurface utilities, followed by the advancement of two geotechnical soil borings (B-1 and B-2) to a depth of 25 feet below ground surface. Soil samples were collected at 2-foot intervals using split-spoon sampling methods, with blow counts recorded throughout the boring advancement. The geophysical survey identified no subsurface utilities or anomalies at the proposed drilling locations. Both borings encountered poorly graded fine-medium grained sand as the primary soil stratigraphy, with groundwater encountered at approximately 7 feet below grade.

Bearing capacity analysis based on in-situ blow count data yielded soil bearing values ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 tons per square foot across the full depths of both borings. Due to the weak soil conditions present at the site and the shallow groundwater table, the investigation recommends a pile-supported foundation system for the maintenance building rather than conventional slab-on-grade construction. The report was submitted by Licensed Professional Geologist Scott Yanuck (NYS License #000330) and Professional Engineer Matthew Aylward (NYS License #093172) on behalf of both Laurel Environmental Geosciences and R&M Engineering, and includes detailed soil boring logs, boring location figures, and photographic documentation of drilling activities and recovered soil samples.

Re: Robert Moses State Park, Golf Course Maintenance Yard 600 Robert Moses State Parkway Babylon, NY 11702 Geotechnical Investigation Report Laurel Project #24-131

Dear Mr. Boone, Laurel Environmental Geosciences, DPC. (Laurel) is pleased to submit this Report documenting the geotechnical investigation conducted at the Robert Moses State Park Golf

Course, located at 600 Robert Moses State Parkway, Babylon, NY 11702 (the Site). This investigation consisted of a geophysical survey to pre-clear the proposed soil boring locations, and the advancement of two (2) geotechnical soil borings at the location of a proposed golf course maintenance storage shed.

GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY

Laurel mobilized to the Site on March 6, 2024, to perform a geophysical survey to pre-clear the proposed soil boring locations. Utilizing ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and line locating equipment, the areas in the vicinity of the proposed soil boring locations were scanned to ensure that there were no subsurface utilities or anomalies located within the drilling areas at the Site.

No utilities or subsurface anomalies were identified at the proposed drilling locations. The geotechnical soil boring locations at the Site are included as Figure 1.0

GEOTECHNICAL SOIL BORING

Laurel and its drilling subcontractor EPhase 2, LLC. (EP2) mobilized to the Site on March 6, 2024, to perform the geotechnical investigation. Drilling was performed utilizing a Track-mounted Geoprobe 6712DT drill rig, equipped with a 140-pound drop-hammer. The geotechnical soil borings designated B-1 and B-2 were advanced to 25-feet below ground surface (bgs). The elevations of B-1 and B-2 were approximately 8 feet and 10 feet above mean sea level, respectively. Utilizing a split-spoon sampler, soil samples were collected in 2-foot intervals continuously from 0 to 25-feet bgs. Soil stratigraphy for each boring was logged by a Laurel geologist utilizing the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), and blow counts

March 11, 2024

Geotechnical Investigation Report, 600 Robert Moses State Parkway, Babylon, New York: Project 24-131 est - )427-5323 were recorded as each soil boring was advanced. The primary soil stratigraphy at both boring locations was documented as poorly graded fine-medium grained sand, with groundwater encountered at approximately 7 feet bgs. Following completion of each soil boring, the boreholes were backfilled with drill cuttings and clean sand to grade. The geotechnical soil boring logs with blow counts for B-1 and B-2 are included as Appendix A, and a photograph log documenting drilling activities at the Site is included as Appendix B.

BEARING ANALYSIS

Soil bearing capacity is estimated from the results of in-situ tests using empirical correlation factors. Soil bearing values (SBVs) were calculated for selected sample depths for undisturbed, structurally rated soils. SBVs are shown in tons per square foot (TSF) and are inferred from blow count data in Table I below.

Table I Bearing Analysis

Boring No. TSF @ 4-ft TSF @ 12-ft TSF @ 14-ft TSF @ 20-ft TSF @ 24-ft B-1 0.5 1.2 1.5 3.0 3.0

Boring No. TSF @ 4-FT TSF @ 16-ft TSF @ 18-ft TSF @ 20-ft TSF @ 24-ft B-2 0.5 1.5 1.0 2.0 3.0

SBVs estimations are based on metrics for saturated sands.

CONCLUSIONS

This investigation consisted of a geophysical survey to preclear the soil boring locations and the advancement and logging of two (2) geotechnical soil borings at the Site. A summary of the findings are as follows:

The geophysical survey identified no subsurface utilities or anomalies within the drilling area.

The primary soil stratigraphy at the Site was documented as poorly graded fine-medium grained sand, with groundwater encountered at approximately 7 feet bgs.

Geotechnical calculations found bearing capacity to be between 0.5 to 3.0 tons per square foot over the course of the full depths of Borings B-1 and B-2.

Due to the weak soils present at the site and the presence of groundwater at 7-ft below grade, we recommend a pile supported foundation system for the new maintenance building being contemplated.

LIMITATIONS

The observations and recommendations detailed herein are based on our experience and training in conjunction with the limited soils exposed at this Site. We believe that this information gives an acceptable degree of reliability in anticipating the soil conditions of the subject property, however accuracy beyond the limits of the soil profiles from which data was obtained cannot be assured.
