APPENDIX 2

SAMPLE LIST OF EVENTS

The following are illustrative examples of program workshops, conferences, meetings and training events in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean where attendance by IAF grantees, other grassroots practitioners and leaders were sponsored through IAF travel grants in previous years:

To help farmers cope with roya, a fungal infection that decimates coffee trees, the Oregon-based nonprofit Sustainable Harvest organized the conference Let’s Talk Roya, Nov. 3-6, in Salinitas, El Salvador. The IAF funded the participation of 22 farmers from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico, Guatemala and Dominican Republic, all of whom are associated with IAF grantee partner organizations that encourage organic production. The IAF request Logistical Support for the grantees to participate in the event.

In March, former Mexican grantee K’inal Antsetik hosted women activists from nine Latin American countries who exchanged their stories about standing up to prejudices based on gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race and social class. The women used class work, theater and other arts to teach the skills of effective advocacy to their less experienced peers. They also joined local women’s organizations to march in support of lesbian rights in the town of San Cristóbal de las Casas.

Eight young Nicaraguans received airfare to play at the Street Kids and At-risk Youth Soccer Tournament in Brazil, which preceded the FIFA World Cup in June. Casa Alianza Nicaragua (CAN) arranged for the participation of 14 other teammates with counterpart from other sources. Street World Cup sponsored the tournament and covered lodging and food for participants from 20 countries.

The IAF covered travel expenses for eight participants attending The Haiti Funders Conference, June 2014, an event intended to foster understanding of good and effective philanthropy in support of Haitian aspirations. The IAF requested logistical support and simultaneous interpretation.

More than 200 activists for LGBT rights and their supporters gathered in Lima in September for the Inaugural Meeting of LGBTI Political Leadership in Latin America and the Caribbean to discuss the pervasive discrimination and violence that targets their community and to improve their participation in political life. The forum, sponsored by the U.S.-based Gay and Lesbian Victory Institute and Promsex, a Peruvian advocacy group. The IAF funded the participation of representatives from K’inal Antsetik, a former Mexican grantee, and Jamaican Pride in Action (PIA), which received a grant in 2014. IAF also supported simultaneous interpretation services to facilitate the full participation of activists from the U.S., the English-speaking Caribbean and Brazil.

As part of Global Disapora Week (GDW) representatives of Guatemalan, Haitian, Honduran, Peruvian and Salvadoran immigrant communities in the United States travelled to El Salvador in October to learn how Fundación para la Educación Social, Económico y Cultural (FUPEC) uses its IAF grant to collaborate with ex-pats to pool resources for improving living conditions back home. The travel grant supported expenses for airfare, hotel, per diem and local transportation.

Dissemination Events with the US Congress. In collaboration with the Inter-American Dialogue (IAD), the IAF will sponsor events on the Hill to discuss various grassroots topics with policy makers and subject matter experts. The IAF will request four Logistical Support Requests for the IAD to organize the events and provide logistical support.
